Are You "Anyone But England"?

ummm i think we may
I avoided one today, nice fella actually but very bitter for some reason like many.
He is Pro Brexit(so not all bad ha) very very vocal about it infact.
Just not good to talk to him about football, gets very irate if you have a different viewpoint.
Even said Ireland would have a better chance of winning the world Cup than the English National side.
Take any football tips off him with a pinch of salt . Ireland got humiliated in the playoffs for qualification .

A friend of a friend posted this on FB, which chimes a bit with my own experience:
I’m of an age that grew up rooting for Brazil in every World Cup. In the earliest of those days no African nation managed to get a side into the finals and no black player was getting picked for the England squad. England was Babylon on and off the pitch. Our riposte as black Britons was the Brazil squads of the ‘70s and ‘80s. They were the Harlem Globetrotters (yeah I’m that old) of football - flamboyant and a world apart in skill and proficiency that almost mocked all who dared challenge them. Pele became a symbol of black pride enabling us to pour scorn on a nation that disrespected us.

This World Cup has seen two major shifts for me, and many others it seems. One is the demise (over the last two tournaments) of the pride giving joyous display of flair and skill from Brazil and other black populated Latin American sides. Footballing ability seems to have been replaced by other pursuits - rugby, wrestling and acting come to mind. The other is Gary Southgate’s England management which seems to have jettisoned jingoistic, self-entitled arrogance in bringing to the World Cup England's most ethnically diverse and youthful side in the tournament’s history.

I’m not quite singing "Football's Coming Home”, my personal politics won’t let me go that far, but David Olusoga provides a reasoned rationale here for what was once for me unthinkable.
Here's the article he references (which I've only skimmed through so far):

Southgate’s England team reflect the best of us. It feels good to embrace them | David Olusoga

Fair play to you Cunty. You've had your money's worth out of this one.

Dunno what all the fuss is about TBH. An integral part of being a football fan is to have a team you love to 'hate'.

Try telling a French or Dutch person they should cheer on Germany cos they are next door neighbours.

How many Ukranians do you think were cheering their Russian next door neighbours?

Good luck in a Manchester pub telling them they should have been cheering Liverpool on against Madrid. Or telling Barca fans they should have been cheering Real. Here's a tip.. order your ambulance in advance.
But nobody is asking non-England fans to cheer for England.

"When Iwas growing up I was surrounded by (english-born) Irish, Welsh, Polish and Scottish kids who ALL wanted england to lose at everything."

We have that here Liam , take no notice of the bullshit Media and the poncy commentators.
They dont represent the working class and ordinary people, they dont air our views, they dont speak for me
Same Radio and talkshit especially.
Look at Gary Lineker i know lots of people who really really dislike him since he become a millionaire luvvie and anti Democratic.
If he comes to the club i follow he will get Dogs abuse.
I think you will find nobody cares on here you dont want England to do well its the same for many of us when the other home nations play.
Mind Pablo being English and hating everything about his country is a little strange i think you will agree ha.
I loved it when Portugal beat Wales the other year, Scotland going out to that Last minute goal years ago to Italy was beautiful . Ireland(even with the English born players) getting knocked out by the Italians in italy, another great night.
its all banter.
Watched the ECF in London Liverpool v Madrid. The Liverpool fans were getting the hump because 90% of the people were supporting the Spaniards who were mainly English.
Someone asked them if it was Man utd playing them who would THEY be supporting, i cant put up what they said up, but i rest my case
Mind they are a strange bunch like Celtic fans, heard some of them on radio saying they dont consider themselves to be English down the years !!!????
Celtic fans so desperate not to be considered Scottish the country they come from !
Mind the biggest joke of Celtics glory hunting support is them thinking they are a massive club playing in a Dog and Duck league.
Will give another reason why they are disliked a little by real football fans in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland i mean later.

Problem is the other Brit Nations hardly get there , we have hardly any no ammo to latch onto, i was struggling with that list tbh.
Oh Bodins pen miss v Belgium, Archies goal but still home early.
Must have changed, Loved Gerry Armstrongs winning goal for Ireland v Spain

My experience both in Harlesden and Moss Side was that most black people born in England supported England in the World Cups in the 70/80s on the grounds that England was their home . When Jamaica qualified ( mainly due to the Jamaican FA seeking out players who had Jamaican parents or grand parents , a bit like the Irish FA did in seeking players with Irish heritage in the 80s) they supported both teams .

you would be surprised- i have had MC England fans ( the post PL and Euro 96 , Loaded reading crowd) expressingly increduility that I do not want England to win- " But we would want you to do well, we would support you if you were in the same situation" teary eyed guardian beautiful game/ three lions/ summer of 66 bollocks they have digested on youtube in preparation for office *bantz*.

Fuck off. I dont need your sympathy to support my team of perennial losers and goal difference exiteers.( not you @sol obvs)

The hard core of long time , full on WC England fans - even the now dying breed of hoolies- would not have tolerated this hand wringing mealy mouthed shit. They understand how this works.

I am grudging accepting that england are on a fantastic and maybe lucky run. Still ABE though.

/happy in my scowling misery

The other thing is that there's a delightful video on Facebook about a couple of English Muslim kids saying prayers for the English team players and wishing they score a goal . Sometimes the 'left ' in its ambition to be anti racist forget that most generations that come here actually like it here and are proud to be English

It was great where i was Black _white all sorts, no matter , drinking all enjoying themselves together
Dancing in the streets, sarf London come alive.
So much misery and horrible fuckers about in this world, just a nice change.
As i said earlier even run out of Cider !

^This is really, really common, I'm surprised people are saying it's not.

England aren't my team which, given I'm not English, should be uncontroversial but apparently is. I'm not ABE, more anybody but all those countries that always win it/expect to win it as it's boring as fuck tbh.

I said when pressed the other week that I'd like an underdog team to do well. My colleague told me that England are an underdog team! I suspect our definitions of 'underdog' might be slightly different....

Spot on.

Looks like that won't embed... and it's on a closed fb group page.

Suffice to say that it consists of drunken England fans happily chanting 'Tiocfaidh ar lá' (blissfully unaware that it is a long-time slogan of the Republican movement) before resuming "Iss cammin' 'ome"

Using people's inability to understand another language to take the piss. Classy.

I'm from Norn Iron but have lived in London for 20 years. I was brought up as an ABE from an early age, staying up late in 1986 when I was 8 to watch England get beat by Portugal and Maradona, so its all I've known.

The last few years have been more bearable as they seemed to come to terms with the fact that England just aren't very good, and I actually started to feel a bit sorry for them after the Iceland debacle, but it all it took was beating Tunisia and Panama to revert to type.

Its more to do with the English media than the normal people - the fake humility when playing better teams, the arrogance when playing 'smaller' countries, and condescending attitude to the other parts of the British Isles. Its just obnoxious and boring so I want you to lose to piss off Ian Wright, Gary Lineker, Martin Tyler, Gary Neville, Alan Shearer et al.

The joy in England when Germany got knocked out reminded me of how much I enjoy seeing England get knocked out. I don't see how they can complain about ABEs after all the gloating about that a week or so ago.

Yes, the media arrogance which fuels the jingoism gets tiresome. And the endless bitterness towards Germany. France. Argentina.

That said, am enjoying England this time round and I genuinely wish them well in the next game. :)

Just bit more on my experience of the SWP in the 80s and the World Cup.

2) we are sitting in the back seats on a coach coming back from some demo. We have some cans and what was called in those days a ghetto blaster with a tape in it and are playing 'world in motion' by New Order . Some lickspittle comes up and tells us we are supporting a soft version of imperialism by playing that song. So we ask him if the party line is that if we are in a club should we no platform it . Lickspittle replies that we should patiently explain to the DJ that class unites and imperialism divides. We go back to playing the record and cracking a few more cans open.

I'm convinced that some political people who come out with that sort of schtick are just using it as a convenient fig leaf to disguise their dislike of football.

I seem to remember every non-England game on TV being ruined by commentators still droning on about England, and then at half-time going to check out what Peter Beardsley is doing by the pool, or watch 'the lads' play ping-pong, or some other bollox. Once England are out the rest of us can just enjoy the football.

So you've not enjoyed any of it so far? There's only four games left!

I've had to nip over to Australia to work for the summer so I've escaped the madness. Martin Tyler is doing the commentating and he's annoying when England are playing but at least its free of the usual banter.

See none of my mates like football so U75 is where I do football things. Consequently all my opinions on ABEs and so on are strictly related to threads on here.

Well the OP (Masterbaiter) is a shit stirring specialist, so it's hardly surprising.

Well I can't speak for others, however I've never said that I hated England, I have a preference for the other team to win. That is enough to raise the heckles of the lunds and they appear to get rather anxious and agitated. Pity the fools.
