Are You "Anyone But England"?

Am Irish, oddly while I don’t support England in football, I wish them well because I’ve English friends and I’d like the to be happy. In rugby I’ve always been abe except in 2003 when England won the WC a northern hemisphere win. Long winded way of saying sometimes I am sometimes I’m not.

As a semi-serious point, I know a number of fellow Europeans living here, and whenever this issue comes up the consensus seems to be that most people genuinely want England to do well. But many find it difficult after a while due to (in our view as non-natives at least) the completely OTT behaviour and antics by both public and media alike.

When England has gone out of a tournament before many expats here were not gleeful but certainly felt relief that the mass lunacy was at an end. This WC has been much better- during the build up and the knockout stage at least- due to the much lower expectations. Something that undoubtedly has played a mayor part in this squad’s performance so far.

For the sake of balance, I always thought Spain did not indulge in such annoying behaviour, but I remember an Urbanite who lives in Spain making similar claims about the Spanish when Spain was winning everything in the 2008-2012 period, which I found interesting. Was it you dessiato ?

had this ultra polite and well written note from the engerlsich students next door to us!! the total bastard hooligans :D

I am sometimes proud to be English. We have a very rich and deep influence everywhere. Great music. Great writing. Great science. Great education. Great legal system. Comedy that transcends cultures. A language understood by many. The list goes on and on. A unique and complicated nation that can only thank those who invaded and those we invited.

I think this thread is a football thing.

I’ve never really liked football, more particularly I’ve hated the bloated obscene amounts of money in the premier league.

I’ve always preferred rugby, much more so since my son got into it. (He supports Wales in rugby and England in football, though he shares my dislike normally, bizarrely thanks to his mum. But that’s another story). Still I’m quite enjoying this one, even watched Belgium Brazil earlier.

I think it’s funny that people bang on about rugby being a posher game than football when there’s a tiny fraction of the money in it. And it’s always been a working class game in Wales.

Where rugby could lead ( aside from the fact you can have a beer whilst watching the game in the stadium) is the various different internationals. Not just the fact that the Ireland team represent the whole island, but the Lions and some of the hemisphere exhibition games.

Imagine a Lions football tour of South America . Or even better - given the world cup became a European cup today- imagine a three team Europe v South America v Africa tournament.

I don't stand for or sing the national anthem, wave a flag, smash things when England lose, chant moronically, join in with jingoistic songs, or boo other countries' football teams. And neither do I care who anyone else supports. But it does get really tedious reading loads of vapid, asinine trolling from cockheads on threads for England matches when the entire point if them posting is to upset and wind people up.
Well tbh, I haven't read or participated in any of the England match threads, I'm not particularly interested. Again, what's with hyper sensitivity of the English fans on this board? If somebody posts something rubbish, ignore it and move on. If they're trolling then it's probably best not to feed them and celebrate your wins however you feel like celebrating them.

I'm not talking about normal footy badinage during a match but rather witless fucks who just post "Hahahaha" or "You didn't get that penalty - serves you right for the firebombing of Dresden" etc. It's just fucking boring and there's no need for it, and to keep doing it marks you down as a proper shiteater.
Again there appears to be a touch of one sided hypersensitivity here. Out in the real world football fans have been known for saying/singing a lot of nasty shit to opposing teams/fans. A good example of that, seeing as you mentioned Dresden, was last years Germany/England "friendly"...

"England’s 1-0 defeat in Dortmund was marred by supporters booing the German national anthem, outstretching their arms to mimic fighter planes and spending large parts of the night going through a repertoire of songs about the first and second world wars."
England fans’ chants in Germany condemned by FA chairman Greg Clarke

It would appear that England fans can dish it out plenty but get a bit crybaby if there's any incoming, which might explain the pitiful whining in this thread about ABE's. As I said earlier, I've not been interested enough to participate in any of the u75 world cup threads so I haven't witnessed any of the alleged ABE transgressions or bad behaviour that the OP's been moaning about.

If Thor's Hammer ends up crushing English hearts today, I shall not be running outside waving a Swedish flag in celebration, it will be a quiet "Yes!" in my own house and maybe a fistpump, as I did when Zlatan scored this brilliant goal...

However, unfortunately, I think England will win. Either way I'm not watching the match and will instead watch a bit of tennis and F1 qualifying.
:)

Yes.

My experience too...there was still fuckery in 96 (smashing German cars etc) but there was a wider feeling of reclaiming the team from Them. Genuine good buzz in London that summer for the most part.

There was an awful lot of fuckery about in 96. As a Scottish person living in London (who's not even into football), it was really, really aggressive and unpleasant.

I was meant to be going out with a black, female English friend the night of the England-Scotland match and we decided not to as the atmosphere felt so bad.

That night, a pissed up England fan tried to glass a Scottish, female friend in the face because he heard her accent and didn't like Scottish people apparently. (One of her friends anticipated what was about to happen and put his hand up and his wrist was very badly cut.)

Obviously he could've done that whenever, but I wasn't surprised he did it that night because the atmosphere was so bad.

To be fair lots of ungerman cars were smashed too in the riot in central London after the Germany match, saw at least one cop car and lots of wholly English windows smashed

it might actually be a good time to go out as I assume a lot of people will be watching.
The longer they stay in the competition, the less crowded the roads and interesting places are...

...and the more crushing the inevitable defeat is when it comes. Win-win.

England games do seem to bring a lot of twats out of the woodwork.

I remember in 2002, I was watching a game with mates in a pub in Bethnal Green when some idiot started slagging me off for being "too dark to support England." And that was something I experienced as a white man with a suntan, fuck knows how he would have reacted if I had been an actual ethnic minority. He shut the fuck up as soon as he realised I was there with multiple people, looking back, I think I should have had him ejected from the pub at the very least.

So while I'm supporting England, I completely understand the point of view of anybody who wants them to lose and bring the whole flag-waving circus to an end. If there's an England-Belgium final, which is the outcome I would put money on if I was betting, I will be torn between wanting England to win, and wanting to see the hilarious reaction of the Sun etc. to Brussels defeating Brexitland.

Were you by chance in the salmon and ball?

that's dreadful. I hope no-one has to hide in fear during the rest of this tournament.

Nah. My old man would never have let that slide. Approach is where people barred from the salmon and the hare drink now.

Do people think nasty international rivalry is unique to England? Granted the Germany thing is embarrassing because they don't give a shit about us. Germany/Holland, Brazil/Argentina, Croatia/Serbia etc etc.
