...and Yemen!

It was reported that Parliament would be convened tomorrow to vote on authorising UK military action, but now it seems that it will not.

In the contest between the heroes of the British Royal Air Force and the children collateral damage of Yemen, there can be only one winner.

'Massive strike' with ship-launched missiles and jets - AP report

"US officials quoted by the Associated Press spoke of a massive retaliatory strike using warship-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles and fighter jets.
The Houthi targets included logistical hubs, air defence systems and arms depots, they said.
AP journalists in Sanaa heard four explosions, but saw no sign of warplanes. Two residents of Hudaydah said they heard five strong explosions.
It is the first US military strike against the Houthis in Yemen since the Iran-backed group began firing drones and missiles at cargo ships in the Red Sea in November."

Happy to admit I know fuck all about the size and sophistication of the Houthi rebels’ weapons and resources, but that statement makes them sound far more formidable than I would have thought. ‘Air defence systems’? Really?

They have dozens of kites, with some very sharp razor blades, that could give a nasty cut to any paratroopers who came into contact with them.

It was good that in a recent Dr Who special, the song known as Wild Blue Yonder, the anthem of the US Air Force, was condemned as being warmongering.

Hang on, we're bombing another country without anybody telling Parliament? Are we declaring war? What the fucks going on?

It’s not a declaration of war, Labour were briefed and agreed so there’s little chance Parliament will take a substantially different view.

I can't see bombing Yemen being a huge vote winner, which is probably want Sir Haircut inside the tent.
It’s not bombing Yemen as a whole, it’s targeted at rebel weapon storage etc. this is being done to reduce their capacity to fuck with the global trade system (something that if they do will cause higher inflation and impact poor people massively).

No polling yet of course, but YouGov should have some within a week. I’d expect a strong majority in favour, and little correlation with views on Gaza. Protecting international shipping from piratical types on boats is a reassuringly traditional thing for Britain to get involved in, and the prior Saudi-Houthi conflict would not have interested most people.

How little you actually know of the situation there. Indeed they started off as rebels but currently they control about half of Yemen including the capital Sana'a.
