or if you're retiring and you want to thank them for not buying you a gold watch?

I think in the first circumstance pretty much anything will do 'Oi you stupid bastards, the building is on fire if you haven't noticed' for example

In the second, a simple wink and guns gesture.

I loathe 'folks' in emails, it makes me cringe.

So I tend to use 'all' or 'everybody'. 'gents' used on emails where it's not just male recipients is also one of my pet hates.
