Alternative Euro 2004: U75 Team Needed

what's our general fitness level, it's probably covered in this thread already, but 11 pages seems a lot to read through right now.

I'm NOT fit, but will be on form for when the tournament starts, I've had virtually 4 months out of training, have added some extra pounds but I get fit quickly and have started back training.

check this tho' gaffer - I WAS gonna go up for the Birkbeck drink up but I know I'll only get drunk etc.. and will be fucked tomorrow, so I've decided to stay in instead. I've bought meself 2 small bottles of Fosters Ice is all. dedication lads...... dedication.

I should have done the same but I didn't. I got drunk and very munted on the old donkey dust. However, I'll still be there this morning....... dedication. ;)

I did only have 2 bottles of fosters at home................... but what can one do when the boys call around - whoops!

but I'll still be there.

Don't know about you guys but I'm broke up from Saturday... which btw was excellent... my bloody legs are cut to bits from the hard ground... I still haven't slept properly so am looking forward to making friends with my bed in the next hour or so... I'm looking forward to Wednesday evening... I was looking at the web site for this competition and although we have nop right to think we can win it... you just never know, so if we do give it a big effort over the next few weeks we should be at a decent enough standard... only if we give it our all tho'... so gaffer you need to keep us on our toes... and suggestions as to what we can do??? I think if we can decide on a keeper and general positions, and get some practise in together, improving our fitness we'll be fine, I think the games in the tournament are only 20 mins so that's not bad, if we played for over an hour on Saturday for the first time and only lost by a goal... anything is possible.

anyway, a light snack, a cold beer and a nice boo is my plan the next hour and then off to bed for a welld eserved sleep.

peace all and cya Wednesday 6:30

Tony

Update on my football adventures at the weekend...

The Rovers did themselves credit (for once - we're usually gash!) by winning our group and qualifying for the quarter finals! We beat Celtic 1-0 courtesy of a last minute penalty won and converted by Fergie - a Hun playing as a ringer for us. A 0-0 draw against Sao Paolo Stompers (who all had a mysteriously east end kind of South American accent :D ) was followed by a 3-0 trouncing of Leyton Orient. And guess what? I scored my first ever goal for us after four years of trying! It was a beauty, took the pass, dragged it past the defender and took my time to curl it round the goalie into the far corner. Hurrah!

In the quarters we lost to Waltham Forest Social Club 1-0, our only goal against in four games being a result of a botched back pass (nothing to do with me). We were denied a last minute penalty by a blind referee

Reading won the tournament with Birmingham runners up (so they still haven't won anything of note in their history). The Plate (for teams that failed to qualify from the group stage) was won by Queens Park (from Glasgow - not QPR) and the wooden spoon was picked up by Cardiff City's 1927 Club, the editor's mates doing their country proud as they were keen to point out in the acceptance speech.

I am not a midfielder - I get confused and run around aimlessly. Either play me at the back or as we did aganst Orient up front (and I enjoyed that!). I can come to training next week but after that I'm playing a Glasgow tournament and then it's the real thing for U75. I am definitely available.

I think the next 4 sessions over the next cpl of weeks we can each try out in different positions, decide then on a formation, we then have a further 2 weeks to oil the machine... I'll be playing once a week with my work team too and I know Chris & Relahni play Monday nights - is there room for any of us to join these Monday night games too  as much football together as we can in the coming weeks and you'd be surprised at how much we can improve.

what's our offiical name btw?

When you guys embark on a off-season tour of North America, I'll be ready to plug any gaps in midfield. Think of Patrick Vieira, minus the endless energy, the height and speed, minus the prem, FA Cup, world and euro cup winners medals and you have me...in pale white skin.

I play a similar game. Great vision and touch, excellent movement and positioning and above all, the complete lack of finishing in front of goal. Yes, when he scores it's usually pretty quality looking, but when he misses, he really misses. I have such a poor shot(lack of ankle flexibility) that on many occasions I'll not shoot. I'm the moron who passes off from the six, that open net not quite open enough, that keeper lying on the ground likely to pull off a Seaman v Sheffield career best save if I shoot. Further, I've got no dribble attack, no moves and no speed when in possession, and my heading abilty is limited by my lack of vertical.

To top it off, a great on-field sense of humour complete with loudly screamed self-condemnation whenever I muck it up.

We don't all play ice hockey ;)

funny you should mention that - we only mentioned on Saturday after the game that we should play ice hockey style, i.e. violently.....

ps: welcome to Urban mate.

Cheers tony. Football is me #1 but I do play hockey as well.

The beauty of ice hockey is that the violence is controlled. Most Canadians don't think twice but I find it absolutely absurd that two opponents can bash the shyte out of each other with more intensity than boxing, sit on a bench for 5 minutes, then return to the game. Imagine Keane and Vieira squaring up in the centre circle for a round of fisticuffs then only being given a yellow. When such things occur in the NBA or NFL the resulting ruckus is more circus-like. Usually one guy throws a cheapie, and flailing girly punches result for mere seconds. Then the late arriving teammates surround and usually a few more cheap shots are delivered from those hiding back from the danger zone.
At least in hockey they just get it done and move on.

I'd be more worried about getting hit with the puck. I took a slap shot on the soft, unprotected back leg on Friday night. Now I have the largest, most painful bruise I've ever seen. A bruise so big it has different colours in each ring extending from the contact point. Blunt force trauma sucks.

It's cool to hear that y'all might play some hockey. As in football, the goal is obviously to put a ball/puck in the opponents net. Both sports share similar aspects such as passing(triangles), movement and postioning in relation to the opponent. It's the skating part that takes some time. :p

Well, you seem to talk the talk JTG... but can you walk the Urban walk is the question.

play hockey... I seriously doubt that, violence on the pitch, well I have had a problem (in the past) with that.

in an ideal world yes, in reality I think not.

for information purposes to anyone reading/following the career of U75-a-side: we played together for the first time on Saturday, in the heat after a heavy night for most of us. first half of the game we went 4-0 down - second half tho' we got it back to 5-5 and then decided on 'next goal wins' and then they scored - our gaffer was well impressed with our movement, passion etc.. in the 2nd half - even tho' she left for a while to go get some food, but hey lest not kid ourselves - they were dirt - we were worse - we got lucky - they got contrary - but we have potential, we shall make Urban75 proud of us.

i reckon we'll be fine.. if mohammed had passed on a couple of occasions we'd have won..

we desperately need a striker though.. if I haven't got someone to set up, I'm effectively useless.. anyone out there who can finish?

no chance on mondays I wouldn't have thought I'm afraid.. I only play to make up numbers if some of relahni and brixtonhatter's mates don't turn up..

See my post above. Born again centre half turned centre forward me ;) Chris Sutton style :D

I've scored a few every season from midfield (in 11-a-side).

Realise I gotta make it to training, coz I think CF is after my position (that I haven't got yet!)

you can have it, I'm gonna sit 'in the hole' behind the striker.. so we'll have to work on interplay, so yeah, you better turn up to training ;)

with my finishing skills it'll be like shearer and sutten all over again ;)

You have to understand this was my first ever game up front for us. I am clearly a natural. Team realised we had loads of defenders and midfielders but no strikers so I was shunted up the park.

Glory beckons :D ;)

"in an ideal world yes, in reality I think not."

Remove tactics from the equation. I'm talking about mentality here. The things that aren't coachable, the things that come naturally to those who excel. Seeing the play before it happens and doing what is needed to pull it off. Knowing where everyone is all around you. Reading the eyes of the opposition. Knowing just how much velocity is needed on the pass to make it succesful. Seeing geometry amongst the players, reading angles and distances.

Include basketball as well. Our local hero Steve Nash credits his years playing soccer(sorry) as paramount in his current role as NBA point guard. Down in the muck, where tactics and formation are afterthoughts, where instinct and reaction take over, advancing a puck, football, or basketball towards the opponents goal without them getting in the way is the common intent. Whether I'm using my feet, hands or a stick, when I look up I see the same picture. I must use the same thinking about what to do. Diagonal runs, decoy runs, chip or lob, soft or hard pass. I must decide instantly or I'll be caught in two minds. The less time to react, the better.

I've offered this to you Brits before and always get the same reaction  Whether it's 5 on 5 or 11 on 11, my thinking is identical. My friend took kinesiology at Uni and he was told that football is the greatest teamsport to learn first because it covers everything there is to know about teamwork.

Maybe my belief would be more acceptable if our damn national team wasn't ranked 73rd or whatever
We want Owen Hargreaves back!!! :D

My body still aches. I knew it would but I forgot had weak and sore it really is after not playing football for about nine months.

I thought we played alright considering some of us hadn't even slept the night before. ;)

It's fitness for me that I need to work on. I'm looking forward to Wednesday.

everyone wants to be a midfielder...

damn right, you gotta be in it to win it (so to speak )

dont think we did too badly on saturday, much improved in the second half - which showed in the fact that we scored five goals!! not too worried that mohammed scored four of them to be fair. the fact that we were getting the ball up there is a start.

think it will take a few more games to concrete eveyones positions, but i do have an idea of the formation (which you will all no doubt ignore ;) ) the amazing blindsight i spotted on saturday was that no one wanted to take responsibilty of defence. relahni held the postion well, but its a job for two not one. i'd like to try out playing a 2-3-1 outfield. dont reckon we need to swamp defence too much to start with, if the midfield do their job everyone should be aware when they need to give any extra support.

the lack of an out and out striker is a concern, but apparently ringo has volunteered ;) will just have to try out different people up front and see how we get on. theres a few weeks left yet, and if we stick to training twice a week we should get it sussed in time.

rotation in terms of first 7 is a necessity though , so no-one should sit back and think their place is safe, or that they are guaranteed a start every game. just like no one wants to be a defender, no one wants to be a sub, but i am afraid its a postion you are all going to have to accept at some point :p

offical name? : urban75 innit ;)

Think we should have a go at rotating people on the CF position, see who can actually finish.

that's the problem B, it isn't my position, we had no-one up front on saturday, we were playing a 3 4 formation, hehe!

I've done well up front when I've played myself there.

What's on Wednesday? It definitely rings a bell (as in I'm doing something) but I can't remember what it is!

Its not Greek dancing night though so if its training I may make it. Where is it? I think I missed the post!
