A thank you to Brexiteers.

Local elections results have surprised me, Lib Dems are ‘Winning Here’, in my leave constituency.
Looks like which way they voted in a yes no referendum almost a decade ago doesn’t matter that much to a lot of people.

if there was a venn diagram that showed
a) voted leave in 2016 &
b) quite uncomplicatedly enjoyed the coronation this weekend & probably had a ceremonial quiche
it would be an almost perfect circle wouldnt it, of old people.

Nah, not your finest moment in here; over-generalisation merging into stereotyping never has done the R side any favours. Was it supposed to be a jokey Coronation night post?

It was. I was also slightly pissed.
Pro-royals should by logic have been remoaners, being fine with unelected powerful foreigners, but don’t think it works that way, just struck me yesterday how the biggest mainstream pro-brexit voices (like the daily mail, and politicians with union jacks on their social media profiles) are reliably also massive royalists.

More of this? Really?

Oh dear......
a full reversal of brexit is not worth talking about, but there are many gradations in between, in both directions.....that seems to be the coming battleground...edging towards a softer (rule taking BINO ;)) brexit on the one hand, or a pivot to deregulation/ US trade deal on the other from the rightwing true believers...Id expect some steps towards EU alignment from Starmer if he wins

Have you read the Lib Dems four steps?

Not impossible just very fuckin expensive

I must say that I was very surprised at her strong rebuttal despite various pundits stressing the favourable polls and some rumours in the media that the Lib Dems might use rejoin ( and PR) as some sort of a possible bargaining chip in the event of Labour approaching them for a coalition in the near future.

ha of course not ? why?
Its here :

The four-stage plan is as follows:

  • Taking immediate action to improve links with our European neighbours, including building closer ties in education by reforming the government’s Turing scheme.
  • Further steps to build confidence and establish stronger relationships with Europe, including seeking cooperation agreements with EU agencies, returning to Erasmus Plus and seeking to reach a UK-EU agreement on asylum seekers.
  • Deepening trade with Europe, including by negotiating greater access for our world-leading UK food and animal products to the Single Market, securing deals on sector-specific work visas and establishing mutual recognition of professional qualifications.
  • Once the trading relationship between the UK and the EU is deepened, and the ties of trust and friendship are renewed, aim to place the UK–EU relationship on a more formal and stable footing by seeking to join the Single Market.

To be fair

I have noticed that of my Facebook friends the ones most loudly mouthing off about not getting a say over head of state were the ones most vociferously upset but the result of the plebiscite and subsequent election. In fact iirc some of them down on the whole idea of public consultation post referendum

It’s funny how throughout the last century or so, almost all political parties, lobby groups, and even countries that have chosen to incorporate the word ‘democratic’ or any variations thereof in their official nomenclature invariably turn to be as champions of democracy as Emperor Palpatine, isn’t it…
