There's an interesting piece in Mojo Mag (I thik) about 1997's Hillsborough Benefit gig at Liverpool's Anfield Stadium which I'd forgotten about.

The event was bankrolled by Richard Branson, and on the bill was The Beautiful South, Manic Street Preachers, Dodgy, Space, Stereophonics and The Lightning Seeds, with John Peel compering.

And, lest we ever forget:

Never buy The Sun.

Great display of solidarity from the Bitters at Wembley yesterday

You can watch the memorial service from Anfield on the club site here.

This weekend marks 23 years since the Hillsborough tragedy in which 96 Liverpool fans died - and if you're not attending Sunday's Memorial Service you can follow it free on LFC TV and online.

The service takes place at Anfield at 2.45pm BST, with access to the stadium from 1pm. In the interests of safety, we've asked all those wishing to attend the service to obtain a ticket in advance. Any tickets remaining on Sunday will be available at the Kop ticket office from 10am.
If you cannot make it, coverage is free on LFC TV and online. A live stream will be embedded in this story from 2.30pm.

I have hope that we're finally getting nearer and nearer to 'The Truth'.

What would justice for the 96 be?
Prosecution of police officers, the public recogniton that they destroyed evidence and hindered the truth coming out and generally acted like arseholes.

Compensation for those who've had to give up so much of their time and money in the fight to establish the truth.

A new enquiry based on the acceptance of the first point that establishes true narrative of what happened and why.

Proper funding for medical and psychological counselling - as well as legal support for the claims against the negligence of soliciters who (mis)represented the victims and their familes.

For starters.

Reading the wiki entry about the disaster, says that three survivors later took their own life as a result of their trauma, and one's been in a psychiatric unit for eight years. One man who was injured is still in a near-vegetative state.

Justice for the 96, and all those who still suffer.

Justice for the 96, and all those who still suffer.

And that's probably the tip of the iceberg. Obviously anyone who was there will be affected by it for the rest of their lives, and it's only when you stop to think about the individual stories - the teenage lad who took a family friend's son to the game and couldn't bring him home, the people who couldn't go to the game and passed their ticket on to someone who didn't come back, the people who had to queue at a phonebox to tell their family that their mate had died, all the people who are still have nightmares and flashbacks - that you realise the full impact it had, and how much worse that was made by various authorities lying to cover their own backs and the media (and the Sun was just the worst - albeit by some way - of a bad bunch) complying with the cover up. Survivor guilt is enough of a problem after going through something as traumatic as that; imagine how much worse it was with newspapers and politicians queueing up to tell you "You should feel guilty, it was your fault for being drunk and not getting to the ground early enough". When people ask what the point is of having another inquiry and why the Hillsborough Justice Campaign and the Hillsborough Families Support Group are still fighting to get the evidence of what really happened out in public, they should remember the impact it's still having on people. "What's it going to achieve after all this time?" Well hopefully, the authorities saying, publicly, "it wasn't your fault; the failures that led to the disaster were totally unacceptable, and people should have been held accountable; the fact that they weren't is inexcusable; the cover-up and attempts to blame you for what happened were disgraceful; we're sorry", might bring some sense of closure and justice, it might help alleviate the survivor guilt and anger that many people still struggle with, and it might help to counter the attitude (that unfortunately is still common among the police) that football fans are a problem to be contained.
