10,000 feared dead in Philippines typhoon

The people putting bodies in mass graves in Tacloban now estimate at least 4,000 dead in the city alone - Aquino was well aware that many areas had yet to be heard from when he made his comments, I don't understand why he would apparently try to downplay the disaster.

Fuck. It's probably going to end up over that 10k estimate, isn't it? :(

American news networks are fucking dire. You really appreciate how good the BBC is once you've spent a little time there tuning into ABC or CNN.

It really is. If you're lucky you get 5 minutes of real news before they spend the next 25 on celebutard fluff. The only thing I bother with is PBS News Hour. I also watch the BBC, but you have to get up at 5:30 am so its not a regular thing.

5,000 people on board that thing. Mental. Bigger than my hometown...

The sailor lot were cool. But the pilots.... They were seriously walking around HK in their flight suits and aviator sunglasses. I thought it was a stag party, but no.. they were the actual pilots. Laughed at by the sailors as much as me.

Girls in LKFwill love them, these boys know what they're doing.

I am so glad the US aircraft carrier is there now. They need the military to get supplies moving to the people that need it, quickly. And these aircraft carriers have fully equipped medical facilities and the ability to produce thousands of gallons of fresh water every day.
yeah that fucker's like a floating city, the biggest, most advanced, most complex machine ever built.

Shame they mostly use it to kill people though

Tbf if you land a jet plane on a aircraft carrier your probably entitled to a bit of an ego seriously dangerous game

Indeed, but they can be lifesavers in an emergency like this.

I hope the various militaries can cut through the crap and get the drinking water and food to the people that need it, quickly.

I'd rather they did this then nothing.
Yes, it has to be a good thing that both the American military and the British equivalent descend on the Phillipines to help out. I pushed a note into the coin box of a local collector for this cause. That was not much but it is better than nothing. I am pleased that the forces from the USA and Britain are taking up this cause. The squaddies involved probably feel good that what they are doing isn't about killing but saving lives. The skills required in the sense of working together in a disciplined way are relevant to both outcomes. Let's applaud this move.

Philippines typhoon survivors attend church services

I wish to thank the Lord. We asked for his help for all the people who survived this typhoon to be able to eat and continue a life that is hopefully more blissful," Belen Curila told the AFP news agency at a service in Guiuan - the first town to be hit by the typhoon.
"The Lord has strengthened our faith and made us stronger in order for us to survive and start off all over again."

in Tacloban, one of the worst-hit cities, Father Amadero Alvero led a service for some 500 people in the half-destroyed and flooded Santo Nino church.
"Despite what happened, we still believe in God," he said.

LOL. :D

got off at forest hill tonight - the red cross shop is open late all week to garner more funds for the appeal- drop in if yer in the 'hood and have just got off the train- they relieved me of a tenner for a bundle of books i wasnt expecting to buy!

Well this has dropped right of the media agenda...

it'll be back on this weekend - HMS Illustrious is due to arrive. lots of room for journo's on board, and she's got the helicopters to take them to so far unreached arears that haven't been saturated with hacks. MoD/RN are also very keen to demonstrate the capability of the carrier/amphibious fleet, so they'll be going out of their way to facilitate the broadcasters. cynical, but if better pictures get it higher up the news agenda...

decent 5 minute item on R4's Today programme just before 9 this morning though, so all hope is not yet lost.

Apprantly hms ilustrious got 500 tons of stores loaded in 24 hours considering its a warship not a container vessel most of the stuff would have ended up being moved by hand at some point:(
Thats some going had to refuel at sea because it headed for the phillippines at top speed and burned through
Its fuel.

I don't visit this thread much because some of the pictures are deeply disturbing and have a very traumatic after effect on me, although I have been anxious to keep abreast of updates.

May I take this opportunity to suggest to the OP to place some of the more graphic pictures within spoiler tags, or am I being unreasonable?

Not sure that will be enough tbh think it may be too story on the BBC for a bit but the media momentum has clearly moved on...

I notice this has slipped from the news. Hope the aid program is working. After the immediate assistance it will take years to get people back on their feet.

Was on ITN this evening though thought the report was odd, almost seemed surprised the locals were doing repairs, what was he expecting that they hang around waiting for insurance assessors

I noticed how quickly things one normally rely on became useless. Mobile phones for example, the masts were all knocked down so no signal, and nowhere to charge them so they were almost immediately useless.

the latter imo

which makes it hard for aid logistics to communicate to deploy and also to actually get stories back which can show how aid delivery is going.

Roads being blocked by debris, ports and airports wiped out haven't helped. It's a massive task up against an mammoth need.

Probably causes the 'helpless third world' narrative some cognitive dissonance.

Filipino people have live through a fair amount of storms etc they need help that empowers them to take ownership of the recovery not hand outs which western media can be proud of.

I heard the opposite, they neglected to pick up stores or aid coz they were in such a hurry to get there and unloaded any old boxes for the pr. Also air partner that won the air freight contract by adding only 1 percent made up for it going for the most expensive charters around. Thank fuck for the US Navy behaving as impeccably as they did after the tsunami
