10,000 feared dead in Philippines typhoon

Seems a little jarring that somebody paid $142 million for a single painting at an art auction in NYC last night while the UN is desperately trying to get $300 million for emergency food, health, sanitation, shelter etc. for 11 million people affected by the typhoon. The entire Christie's auction brought in $690 million, no word of any of it being donated anywhere.

Or that the UK spends £15m a day on the war in Afghanistan but they will only give a fraction of that to the aid effort.

Anyway I get paid on Friday. Like lemon eddy I'll give the money I'd only waste on booze.

news last night sid that the deathcount could get lowered quite significantly.

And i would donate, but I've got no job and I'm skinto.

I donated directly to the Philippine's Red Cross - you can donate via paypal on their site as well.

This is only going to get worse, isn't it? And at the time when vulnerable communities around the world need our help the most, we'll be battening down the hatches as we steel ourselves for whatever climate change brings our own way.

I see the USS George Washington carrier is docking there today to help out. They spent the last few days here on R&R here in HK. I met some surprisingly intelligent, lucid members of the crew in my local watering holes. Happy to have my preconceptions about US servicemen altered. They actually did give a fuck about this. They all live in Japan, and so maybe have a better world-view than people may think.

Our carrier is on its way they are jolly handy things when shit like this happens.
ours more than most as it doesn't have any jet fighters that need to continue to fly landing just because jet fighters landing on carriers is so dangerous stop practicing it and bad things happen:(

HMS Daring due to arrive in the Philipines from Anti-Ballistic Missile trials in the Pacific on Friday 15th, HMS Illustrious due to arrive on Sunday 24th from an exercise in the Arabian Sea.

RAF C-17 transport aircraft arrived Weds 13th , current plan appears to be to remain in-country to provide heavy airlift to damaged airstrips that civilian cargo aircraft can't access.

UK DEC appeal at £23m, UK government aid at '£20m+'.

On Tuesday, while baking a loaf of bread, I was listening to the radio about the devastating typhoon and wondering if there was anything I could do. I had a quiet day planned for Wednesday so that evening I delivered leaflets to every house in my street letting them know that for a donation of £2.50 they could have a freshly baked loaf of bread.

Today I gave all the cash to the DEC appeal - £157. It's amazing how generous people can be when given a chance.

C17 proved itself after tsunami big difference is it can reverse. Only rented from US to be replced by Airbus equivilent of C130, dull move and slightly off topic

How much more cash do they need right at the moment?

I remember when they had the Fukushima flood issues they had all the cash they needed but it was just the actual logistics of getting people and resources in fast enough that was the bottleneck.

sorry, i wasn't insinuating that it was any less of a dissaster, just trying to give some good news in a terrible situation.

There are a massive number of people in serious danger at the moment who need help - hopefully the death toll will stay where it is. :(

Death toll at 10k, president says it may be only 2k. I know which one sounds a bit "better".

With around half a million people displaced (estimates cluster around this figure with quite big error bars), many with limited or no access to clean water, food, shelter, healthcare. Many areas not even contacted yet - no way of telling what's going on.

Let's hope the news stays as 'good' as it currently is...

not any more - still OT though!

the C-17's have been bought outright and will remain in service if/when the A-400M replces the C-130 (as well as the fleet increaced from 4 to 8) - as you say, they are just too capable, too rugged, and too long ranged.

they carry twice the payload weight of the A-400M...

Not that rugged if you use them for rough field landing they basically need to be rebuilt afterwards.
But bloody useful regardless.
The a400m seemed like a good idea but was hilariously over priced.

No worries fella, wasn't having a go, just observing (plus was knackered so tone might have been off)...

Reading things like this warm my heart.:)

I'm not having an easy time with DEC's systems. :(

U S A, U S A

ABC news gleefully reporting the American military's arrival in the Philippines with the strap line "America To The Rescue" and pictures of GIs handing out supplies to the natives, while TWENTY ONE (count 'em!) choppers swoop dramatically over the devastation.

Good job too, those people desperately need help, but the posturing is a bit OTT. All about how great America is, little focus on the situation on the ground.

Rant over

I am so glad the US aircraft carrier is there now. They need the military to get supplies moving to the people that need it, quickly. And these aircraft carriers have fully equipped medical facilities and the ability to produce thousands of gallons of fresh water every day.

The people putting bodies in mass graves in Tacloban now estimate at least 4,000 dead in the city alone - Aquino was well aware that many areas had yet to be heard from when he made his comments, I don't understand why he would apparently try to downplay the disaster.

5,000 people on board that thing. Mental. Bigger than my hometown...

The sailor lot were cool. But the pilots.... They were seriously walking around HK in their flight suits and aviator sunglasses. I thought it was a stag party, but no.. they were the actual pilots. Laughed at by the sailors as much as me.

ah yes, the greatest force in the universe - the ego of a pilot!

how do you know the person you just met is a pilot? easy, he'll tell you... so, enough about you, lets talk about me.
