10,000 feared dead in Philippines typhoon

Fuck, knew it was bad, but that's a massive number of deaths. No way of knowing if that is an accurate figure. These typhoons are getting worse every year, too. :(

I thought I saw something about 200 mile winds when half asleep. I think I thought I was dreaming. that seems impossibly windy. Poor bastards. :(

They had an earthquake just over a month ago. Many people were made homeless by that and were living in shelters when the typhoon struck.
I was watching some video of the storm on the news. Absolutely brutal. Hate to think what the final death toll will be.

So it looks like the climate scientists are right and extreme weather will be more frequent?

Fucking really bad. They have to go through this every year. There was an official saying a couple of days ago that he expected zero fatalities, given the preparedness etc.

Typhoon season down here should have stopped a month or two ago. We are still getting weekly warnings even here in hk. Climate change, naaaaahhh...

Strongest storm ever to hit land. I suspect 10,000 dead is fairly conservative. Some of the scenes are sadly familiar of the Japan Tsunami crossed with the 'Boxing Day' one. 20ft+ storm surge, 195mph winds in places where many live in shacks with tin roofs. Horrific.

Certainly looks like it - some of the poorest people in the world are paying the price for our lifestyles and it's only going to get worse.

I thought when they said on the news the other day that only 4 people had died, that the figures would change, and rapidly. (I did have a small glimmer of hope, and thought it may be because they'd evacuated lots of people, but..) That was one monster storm, and although it's lost strength, is still at large and fucking shit up in Veitnam. Crazy weather seems to be becoming more frequent. Not cool, unless it brings me shed loads of snow.

plus the cholera and typhoid hasnt begun yet..shock and exposure killing many more right now as we speak...doesnt bear thinking about .

I suspect with the islands being cut off and no direct roads from one to another is going to be far more difficult to get supplies in. Media doing the usual 'looting' sighting stories, but seriously, what choice do people have?
exactly - that really annoyed me on the news - they're trying to bloody survive, not make a fast buck.
