No Country for Old Men

Fucken hell..The Coen Brothers do Cormac

like every one of his books it is very good...only came out about two years ago iirc

Wow. Been waiting for this film, and if that trailer's anything to go by, it won't disappoint. Kind of reminds me (-obviously?) of Blood Simple.

The cast looks well up to the task. It took me a few seconds to realise that the woman is Kelly Macdonald. :)

I never go to the cinema but in this case I'm there on the first screening.
Anyone have any idea when this is likely to debut in the UK??

I don't think it's due out in the US 'til September/October, so there's probably quite a while to wait yet. :(

You know it's going to be worth it though. :)

According to IMDB, the release date is 8 February 2008! :(

Although I expect that it's likely to be shown at the London Film Festival, which is in October.

thanks for that...fingers crossed for October

The book, although an ideal story/plot for the Coen's, is not one of McCarthy's better efforts.
There is a possibility that this may turn out to be that rare occurance of the film being better than the book.
Looking forward to it either way.

I was lucky enough to see this in Cannes and it certainly is a return to form...

Javier Berdem is one baaaaad dude in this.

It's still a goood boook but I must admit I would have rather seen them tackle (part of) the Border Trilogy or even good ole Suttree.
The Road...now that would make for one fucked-up movie:eek:

I like the look of that - I tend to prefer the Coen Brothers more obviously funny movies (Big Lebowski) but that one looks good.

Tommy Lee Jones can be great in that sort of role.

The Road's in development. I'm looking forward to the NCFOM movie, but the book was REALLY disappointing.

no idea what McCarthy was up to with that one

Anyone seen previews of this yet?

Sounding really, really promising from the early reviews.....not sure I will see it here any time soon though.

:(

I frequently find the Coen Brothers overrated and recently their output has been mostly disappointing, but I saw No Country for Old Men yesterday and it was absolutely brilliant. I've fallen for the "their best film yet" hype a few times (The Man Who Wasn't There, O Brother Where Art Thou?) only to be disappointed, but here it is thoroughly justified. Utterly gripping, this is also one of the best looking films I've seen in quite a while with the sparse Midwestern enviroments looking like hyperreal paintings. Javier Bardem, sporting one of the least flattering hair styles ever, plays one of cinema's great movie monsters and the rest of the cast is just as good. My favourite film of theirs has always been their first, Blood Simple and this is a return the that kind of bleak, mean, pared down thriller.

Best film of the year and the one that restored my faith in the Coen Brothers.

Is it true that it has absolutely no music whatsoever?

Now that you mention it, I can't exactly remember

I was so engrossed by the film that if there was a score then it must have been minimal. Every suspenseful scene I remember plays out to no music which made the film even more tense. There is a rather nice piece by the Coens' regular composer Carter Burwell over the credits.

i'm glad it's good: the book is pretty awful, the worst by a long chalk McCarthy has written, but it did seem to have something in there that would lend itself to a great movie.

cool.

oh, and I love the Coens, despite the last couple....

Really looking forward to this now.

Fuck know's when we'll get it in Switzerland - aside from the big bucks Hollywood films, a lot of films are already out on dvd in the UK about the same time as they get cinema release here. :(

i was very disappointed by the book. it was a pulp thriller - no more than that.

the beauty of cormac mccarthy's books is in the evocative language.they're not about the plot.

what the coen brothers make of it we'll have to see. i haven't read any of the source books that have been turned into their films but i can't see why a good film can't be made from a substandard book

I haven't read the novel, but the film doesn't feel like a literary adaptation. Much of it being a long chase sequence, it felt entirely cinematic.

When I read the book I got the feeling it may have adapted from a screenplay.
It's more than just a pulp thriller though. It is (apparently) a literary representation of chaos theory.
