Your daily cat and kitten news

Beauty has spent quite some time lazing in the chair, with her tum exposed to the sunlight through the window.
Interspersed with obligatory washing n grooming ...
[Every time I went near with the camera she got the huff and stopped being cute]

I've just got back from a night away. Firstly thank fuck the newly-bought automatic feeder worked successfully.

But secondly, how clingy can one cat get? He's all over me, trampling all over the keyboard even more than normal.
Those robot cat feeders are a bloody miracle. There's been a couple of times when we've been out hiking, got lost and would only be back late, and I've just been able to click on the app to send him a feed through so he doesn't go hungry.

OK so I've bought some Vetfleece for Jakey - it's the stuff they use in veterinary ward cages/pods and a lot of you are probably familiar with it, but for those who aren't - it's entirely synthetic and antibacterial deep pile fleece fabric with a porous rubber backing - so fluids can drain straight through it.
So this should stop Jakey waking up with wet fur if he's pissed so much in his sleep that the incontinence mat he sleeps on is damp on the surface, the fleece raises him off that a bit and supposedly it stays dry and doesn't harbour bacteria, it's designed to be used on top of an incontinence sheet to help with comfort.

It makes great warm and soft pet bedding anyway, especially in situations where using a pet bed, pillow, or blankets isn't convenient (incontinence, animal that doesn't like to use a bed with raised sides or igloo style) so this should help him stay dry and warm.

He'd curled up and zonked out on it within seconds of me putting that on top of a fresh inco mat on my lap, very happy warm boy.

I'll report back about how well piss drains through it, the main aim is to keep his fur dry and keep him warm overnight.

Also just want to say how grateful I am to the generosity that has enabled me to buy some nice supplies for him to keep him comfy and warm as well as covering the tests he had and ongoing medical supplies and treatment, I want to do right by him and get him everything he needs to stay happy in this stage of his life, and it means the world to me that I am able to do that without worrying about spending a bit on him here and there. :)

Mine's a little lower tech: two trays, each of which can be set on a timer for up to 24 hours' time.

I'd love to know whether he was awaiting their release, awoken by the noise, or outside and only noticed them when he walked past/smelt them. I shall never know.

I now can't shift Jakey off my lap for long enough to stand up to head to the loo, he's complaining that I've shifted him off his lovely fleece and it's a battle to stop him getting back on before I've stood up 🤣

He has pissed on it, as he tends to do when he is sound asleep - there is a small sensation of dampness right after he's pissed on it if I press my hand on the top of it, but it's not wet wet if that makes sense.
The wee mostly went through to the incontinence mat underneath, as advertised.
He seems to absolutely love it, he's spark out, very relaxed, and it warms up nicely from his own body heat where he's in contact with it.

I've been putting a (warm, not hot, about 60C) hot water bottle zipped into a cushion cover under his incontinence mat the last couple of nights when it's been cold (I also "tent" a blanket between the back and arm of the sofa to provide a warmer pocket of air and give him a manky old pillowcase or t-shirt in case he wants a bit of fabric to burrow under and it doesn't matter if it gets pissed on), and I reckon the addition of the Vetfleece will provide an extra bit of coziness.

I wish he could sleep in bed with me, I hope it doesn't sound horrible but I really don't want to be dealing with cat piss in my bed :( He seems fine on the sofa mind you and actually slept there for most of his life while Sonic was alive, just a matter of making sure he has some comfort and stays warm and dry on the sofa overnight.

The blanket tent has been my usual strategy for previous cats in cold weather. But this one HAS to be by a window. Location, location, location.

They can be so peculiar about their favourite lookout and sleeping spots!

Sonic and Jakey used to either share a cat bed that was permanently on the other seat of this sofa next to where I usually sit, or they'd lounge along the back of the sofa on an old pillow. At least when they wanted to sleep in the same place instead of bickering about who owned my lap (Sonic always won that argument, he was very dominant!) :D
After Sonic died, Jakey absolutely refused to even go near either the cat bed or the back of the sofa and has never so much as sat in either spot again, it was really quite heartbreaking.
He quite gleefully took up full and sole occupancy of my lap though.
