Washing a cat can indeed be a tricky business, but alas sometimes necessary because as you rightly say, anything they get on them will end up being ingested when they groom it off themselves, where it could do far more damage.
I found a sponge bath type deal worked quite well, accompanied by plenty of treats
although you do find out what cat swear words sound like...
My first boyfriend had a very old cat named Tinkle, who I think I've talked about on here before. He was an absolute menace Former fighter, bruiser, terrorist to every cat, dog and fox in the neighbourhood. At 18 (when I knew him), he'd survived two strokes and being run over once, and despite being blind, deaf and chronically arthritic he was still a menace. Anyway, he stank like an old cat often does, so from time to time we used to put him in a sink half full of warm water and give him a gentle bath.
