Your daily cat and kitten news

Gonna be an expensive month this month - (below is just a brain dump of things so not necessarily in correct chronological order)

FiF's took to limping, an appointment was made, then she stopped limping but we took her in any way. Then the stopped / drastically reduced the amount she was eating - back in for (sedated) blood tests

FiFi hypo'd (diabetic / insulin) so straight into the vets to be kept in for a day - this is only the third hypo in nearly 30 months and with the first one we didn't know what we were doing

Clive, I think, did a massive sick, started eating again later that day, then stopped eating and drinking

FiF's then decided that she really wasn't going to eat, but is drinking - both into vets for a general poking and prodding and results of FiF's blood tests. So, apart from being 20+ years old AND diabetic for the last 2.5+ years AND with some kidney "issues" it would appear that she's hyper thyroid to boot - but we can't treat the hyperthyroidism until the eating / diabetes / insulin is settling down

Then this morning Clive still hasn't eaten or drunk much / anything despite yesterday having an appetite booster / nausea suppressor - into the vet for blood tests but I got a vet to check him again - he's just starting to show signs of being dehydrated so he's been admitted for fluids and opiate pain relief

Fuck know how much this is going to cost - I'm estimating if all goes well, "around" a grand

This will be brought up at the end of month performance review that they're all due - there's going to be some serious "putting out" from these two cats needed to put the column back into "credit" I can tell you

Just had a call from the vet re: Clive's blood tests - all seems OK apart from white cell count which is down, most likely due to him fighting an infection / virus / bacteria / summat

He's going to be kept on IV hydration / pain relief, he'll most likely be kept in over night so they can monitor whatever "comes out" iykwim and any samples thus obtained can be sent away for testing

There's still the option of an ultrasound examination tomorrow, but rather alarmingly there was also mention of surgery - although what they fuck they'll be able to do with surgery is, at the moment, beyond my comprehension - certainly not any transplant, so it's either cutting out and throwing away or cutting open to have a bit of a better look around, neither of which I'm overly keen about

I was a bit worried that he might have ingested something toxic but as the liver would most likely take care / take the hit of anything toxic and his liver readings are fine then that's one thing we don't have to worry about

But off the back of this, given that FiFi has similarly stopped eating at very similar time scale, it's not beyond the possibility that they may have both caught the same bug

Interestingly Casper, Clive's brother, at the moment, seems fine

Hope they both recover soon!

Paddy's off to the vet next week as although he's eating well and seems his usual self, he's been drinking water and weeing more than usual.

It would be easier to monitor his water intake if he didn't have a propensity to use his drinking bowl to wash his paws after using the litter tray. Needs to be changed about three times a day due to the resulting mud and sludge at the bottom of the bowl. I have never come across a cat washing his hands (sic) after using the loo (sic) and I'd be surprised if anyone else had.

I'm happy to report that Lilith seems her normal self again today. She never came to me for cuddles and didn't go out yesterday because she was too busy trying to find her lost mouse, all day and into the early hours of this morning. I even had to get out of bed a couple of times and remove her from the CD/DVD shelf. But today she's come to me for cuddles and gone out as usual. It must have been a particularly juicy mouse!

Naughty Kizzy!

Jakey had his quarterly geriatric check-up this evening.
No sign of any of the problems that can be caused by his medication (anaemia and blood pressure issues)
Hasn't lost any more weight.
All in all looks stable and in fairly good form given his age and chronic health condition.

I mean at his age and with his issues he could still go downhill tomorrow even if he looks good today, but overall it's good news and hopefully he'll be with us for a while yet :)

Well, we have now got two cats staying overnight at the vets

After an update on the state of Clive the subject of FiFs cropped up

Long story short the vet wanted her in asap for a blood test, IV hydration and assorted cosseting

Blood test result appears to be very similar to Clives (all good apart from low white blood cell count which is most likely symptomatic of fighting an infection)

Which leaves us Casper

All heated bedding has been switched off leaving me and Mrs Voltz as the only source of cat friendly warmth currently available

Poor loves!
Sounds like they've both caught something from your description, hopefully with support at the vet they'll fight it off soon and be back on form and home to you soon.

The bills for 2 cats at once though on top of the worry, are they insured? :(

I recommend those small cheap fleeces you can get from ASDA/Morrisons or other supermarkets that have a homewares section - I have some that are about 120 x 180mm and were about a fiver each, a bit too small for comletely covering most adult humans, but absolutely ideal for keeping cats warm without having to pay for energy to do so (or over your lap or round your shoulders, I wrap Jakey up in one on my lap and it keeps us both warm).

But on the plus side we've got knocking on 10 years X 3 cats worth of insurance premiums "technically" in the bank
