Your daily cat and kitten news

What age is he Red Cat ?

When my fella got to a certain age he started ranging much further, for much longer. I worried and worried but he’s always been fine. These days, when it’s warm, I don’t see him from supper time til dawn, when he comes in, eats and crashes out. No idea what he’s up to. I don’t worry now but I do miss him and wonder about his private life.

As you know, as any cat person knows, they’ll always eventually train us to fall in with their preferences, however hard we work to make it work the other way around.

8 months. He's in now, after running out one more time!

I do wonder if cats realise how contrary they are.

cats think they are perfectly rational and that hoomans are weird

:p

i've said this before, but when i lived with two kitties, one of them (and it was the one who was generally quite cautious verging on nervous about most things) tended to go away for weekends (although it's just possible he came in for food when i was either asleep or out) and would usually come home monday (or sometimes tuesday) evening, have a big feed then sleep for a day or so.

i never did find out where the parties were... after he'd got in to the habit, i only went in to 'missing cat' mode on about the thursday. and the little sod was home within an hour of me doing some leafletting...

I don’t worry now but I do miss him and wonder about his private life.

if he's the sort of cat who will wear a collar and not 'lose' it within hours, from some very quick research, looks like you can get GPS tags for cat collars for 30 quid. you might find that he has a second home somewhere, or at least find out where the catnip parties are happening...

We have a cat flap that you can set to let them in but not out again, Red Cat - it's been quite useful recently.

Ah that is useful, we've just had the door open through the summer (i know, what summer) but after the back to school heatwave, we'll probably be wanting to close it more often. Will look into that x

Does anyone else have a cat that follows you out of the house and has to be discouraged from crossing big roads?
One of my brother’s family cats has taken to doing this when any of the children leaves the house - there is a park nearby but a huge busy 60mph limit A road is inbetween the house and the park. Not sure how to discourage her from diligently protecting her charges.

Our previous cat Buttons would follow Mrs SFM as she left the house to catch the bus on Meanwood Road but, worrying as that was, she always stopped at a point where her territory ended - almost like an invisible barrier. Hopefully this is a case of the same and it’s also a case of “no further” 🙂

I had a cat that used to follow me from my house in Headingley to my girlfriend’s near Meanwood Park, crossing Grove Lane. We just had to wait for her and make sure she didn’t come a cropper.

It’s nerve wracking for sure. Our other boy Vic wails like a child if she sees us walking away from the house and follows us down the street to the point we have to go back home and distract him until we can escape once more.

Dramatic facepalm

First in a series of four photos: a black cat lying on her side on some grass, in the sunshine
Two: the cat starts to turn so her upper body is upsidedown, and begins to stretch one front paw out
Three: the cat is mostly lying upsidedown, both front paws stretched wide out in front of her in a blur of movement
Four: the cat is lying on her side, head thrown backwards, with her upper front paw nex to her face as if she was facepalming or doing an overdramatic pretending-to-faint pose

Bit different out here, they don't seem to go further than where the farm track meets the road anyway but there wouldn't be much danger if they did. They're mostly out all night and sometimes don't appear for a few days. Biggest worry is the two that hang out with me also like to make friends with all the campsite guests, and it's easy to imagine them falling asleep in a comfy spot in someone's van and not being noticed until they're back on the mainland and hundreds of miles away.

i just went outside for something, and got quite an earful from downstairs kitty because i wouldn't open her front door so she could go inside.

i have tried to explain that i can't open that door, but don't think she has quite got the message...

Just came downstairs to find Vic proudly standing over a mangled squirrel. Blood and gore aside (the rug will need a good scrub) I’m amazed how he gets them through the cat flap.
We knew something was up as Lil’ Bob was scratching and crying at the bedroom door at Tits O’ clock this morning. Poor lad doesn’t have the stomach for “proper” cat behaviour and I think he was a bit freaked out by his brother’s antics.

What a naughty smirk on that second pic! He's a fine figure of a beast.

I've moved from my normal WFH room upstairs to the lounge downstairs, because it's noticeably cooler.

Idiot cat knows this too, but isn't prepared to leave his beloved pillow in the spare room.

ETA: And just as I type that he's come down and jumped up on the table to say hi. I wish he'd realise that the sofa and the big office chair are just as comfy as the bed, but a lot cooler.
