WTF are they doing to the kids playground in Max Roach park?

editor

hiraethified
It's been an unsightly, fenced in mess for months and months, with the swings and playground area marooned behind the fencing.

What are they doing there? And why is it taking so long? I imagine parents are well pissed off that they can't take their kids to the park.

theres quite a lot park renovation going on at the moment - my locals just had a refit, as has another a bit down the way. though they didnt take as long as yours it sounds like.

They are effectively stealing a public park from the public of all ages and replacing it with an activity park for children only.

I can't find the plans on the LBL website but I'm sure I saw them and somehow never realised just how big this thing would be and how much of the park it would consume.

My view of trees and paths is disappearing and being replaced by a view of buildings and a large playground. At this end of the road we have the noise of the traffic, the bus stop and the school to contend with, now we are set to have even more noise from the play park with all of it's after school activities.

Bah, I guess I'm being a nimby but sheesh, it was a really nice green space. :(

There's some weird towering brick construction with a row of large metal tubes sticking out the ground opposite going on in Max Roach park now. It's summer FFS. It should be open for people to enjoy.

it does look like it's going to take up the lions share of the villa rd side of the park

it may be the final end to the traditional hole in the wall path

i'd be more bothered if i thought i'd still be around to see it finished

the metal poles look like a frame work for some kind of structure... they are doing summin similar up at the other corner too

what i want to know is what going on with those big earth banks they are making... some sort of bike track?

the park still has some places to picnic though... and generaly it doesn't get THAT basy

I used to enjoy walking through the park on my way up to Brixton, it was a small but pleasant stroll through trees and lawn, now the path goes past a newly laid brick wall. :(

My kids are certainly pissed off that they can't take me to the park. :(

They do sometimes take a long time, but not another fifty years!

The foreshortened thread titles that we currently have show this one as 'WTF are they doing to the kids.' :D

It does sound like an annoying development, though - mostly what kids need is just space and a few simple pieces of equipment. One of the basketball courts here was shut down and turned into a building site for 2 years before finally being remade into a ... basketball court. They didn't even change the flooring, just fenced off a bit at the side to create a section that's not useful for anything at all.

i'm probably going to be moving in a few months

they are doing a lot here it's going to be significantly diffrent and the pace isn't slow

Hmm, well the brick wall didn't extend as far as I looked like it would, it got a lot taller though. It doesn't resemble any kind of known structure yet.

I found this architect's drawing of the proposal although nothing resembles that idyllic little scene at all.

Conversation with some friends brought up the notion that all of us are deterred from taking the park path to Brixton (as shown in the streetview above) at night as now there are good places for muggers to hide. There was good visibility before. Perhaps they will install some of those lights that they put out the back on the new council houses, the lights that turn night into day and force me to get blackout curtains.

Found this (not exactly open though is it?) Maybe the brick tower will become a toilet?

Lambeth leads the way
in inclusive design
Building work has begun at Max Roach Park in Brixton. The park is being
transformed into a play park through the injection of Aiming High capital
funding and will be open at the start of the school summer holidays. The play
park has been designed to include the needs of children with profound and
multiple disabilities.
In the new park there will be a sand and water play area all within a dog free
play lawn. An accessible route will lead past a nest swing and hammocks to
the existing adventure playground building.
The adventure playground building is having a general refurbishment and a
new toilet facility to ‘Changing Places’ standards is being installed which will
be accessed using a new entrance.
Max Roach Adventure Playground will continue to lead the way in art and
digital media projects. A new and larger digital media room will have height
adjustable desks and a permanent outdoor screen will transform the
playground into a cinema space for viewing digital art, film and music projects.
The new play park will be open all year round and staffed by a skilled team of
play workers – delivering play activities for children.
John Sloan, Aiming High programme manager said: “council officers, Lambeth
Community Health, parents, carers, children, young people and an award
winning team of architects got together through workshops to come up with
this very exciting and inclusive design, which is located in the very heart of
Brixton and will provide a interactive fun experience for children and young
people with complex needs”.
The play park will open in June 2010 (please note that children and young
people accessing Max Roach must be accompanied by a parent carer or
personal assistant).

"Max Roach Adventure Playground will continue to lead the way in art and
digital media projects."

Why does it have to "lead the way?" That sounds suspiciously like a means to justify higher than normal costs.

So the new building might be a toilet? *Bites tongue until we know for sure* Aaaargh.

Permanent outdoor screen? Just the thing for watching movies in a country that has t-shirt weather for less than 25% of the year. :D

"“council officers, Lambeth Community Health, parents, carers, children, young people and an award winning team of architects got together". Although neighbouring residents and other park users were not invited it seems.

Trying hard to reserve judgement and not be such a nimby but I mourn for the lovely green space that was there. :(

To be honest I think its a great idea, disabled children have very few opportunities to play and enjoy any form of physical exercise and if this allows them to get a chance to do what non disabled kids take for granted then IMHO its well worth the small loss of open green space. It's also fantastic to see that the Council have planned this with the Changing Places scheme in mind http://www.changing-places.org/ . Now I really am no fan of Nu Labour in Lambeth but credit where credit is due!

Of course the whole concept is terrific, I just can't help but feel that there were probably other locations that could have been used. Would have been nice to see some current eyesore overhauled to create this rather than an already lovely space demolished for it.

Starting to take shape, parts of the complex look like they might actually be pretty nice when finished. Main worry is this screen/stage thingy and the toilet block. At the moment, in my view from the window they are obscured by leafy trees but i'll be looking at them every day in all their glory over the long winter months so they better not be an eyesore.

Noticed that on the way home, the freshly laid turf looks really nice alongside the dried up brown grass that's already there.
