anyone excited or a bit non plussed this year. doesn't feel right it taking place at this time of year.

Think the more important point is that it doesn't feel right where it is taking place.
agreed. oddly the press hasn't worked itself up into its usual lather about England's prospects. Guess there is still time for that.

Is it not against the sausage fingered law to shred her madge?
In the video he admits that he would he breaking the law. But it does make me love Lycett even more.

Back to the topic:
The whole thing will be colossal shit show. On the other thread, some e mentioned that BBC and ITV have been given in essence a gagging order to stop them discussing or filming anything 'negative' they see.

Plus there's the 'accommodation' (read: cargo containers with beds in them) for fans, which are also the only place where alcohol is readily available and there's no segregation between fans, which will go swimmingly.

Also, it's England at World Cup- so gove ot three days before we see someone with an actual towel on their head.

Finally, I hadn't thought about this until I watched something on YouTube about it. If, as I believe, it's going to be a terrible World Cup, then the likely narrative after won't be 'it was a shit show because a totalitarian dictatorship used a world cup to 'sportswash' their reputation, and failed because its bloody stupid to hold a World Cup, in a desert, in December.' instead it'll be 'Qatar is a backwards country because its Muslim and Islam is a 'terrorist religion'.' (just to clarify, I believe the former, not the latter.).

I didn't see the vid.

I won't be watching it. I was going to get behind Wales but the more I've read about the whole thing the more it's put me off.

It's the jewel in the Crown of a totally global shit show right now.

I'll be glad when it and Christmas are over 😪

I'm so excited for Wales, but must admit I'm gutted for them that it's this World Cup they've qualified for. Any other time we'd have probably have gone but no bloody way.

So I'm still going to be excited for Wales, it's not their fault global football is a corrupt shitshow. My daughter is going with her school to wave off the team tomorrow - I'm trying to dampen down her expectations from "personal audience with Gareth Bale" :D

Yeah, I should be excited for Wales, but I'm struggling. And England are genuine contenders. That should be exciting.

As we saw in Russia, FIFA's method is to pretend that there is nothing wrong with anything at all anywhere. I hope that method gets them their arses handed to them this time. Still not sure I'm going to be watching, which is a shame as tournament football is all I watch nowadays. May have to switch to just watching the women's game.

I'm very glad I downloaded the iphone calendar for all the games. So many people keep trying to arrange stuff during important matches and I'm constantly cross-referencing to see what the potential clashes are.

It does slightly bother/irritate me how much the timing specifically is getting mentioned.

Sure, it's a problem for the European leagues, but 'summer' World Cups interrupt plenty of leagues too.

And what does that mean? Are certain countries permanently excluded from hosting because they can't host a 'summer' tournament.

Aside from anything else, frankly there's been enough complaints of previous international tournaments that all the players are (understandably) knackered from having just completed a full season of league and multiple cups. Always felt that sort of makes an argument for at least trying a tournament at a different point in the season.

I agree with the above. I also have a problem with the idea that a WC shouldn't be staged in a place where alcohol consumption is prohibited/restricted. Lack/restriction of alcohol and time of year are not the right objections to be made, imo. And they detract from the real reasons this WC is objectionable.

Hmm not sure about this one. It has been held in the northern hemisphere summer... forever. Nearly 100 years. And what leagues are you thinking of that are normally interrupted? American?

I hope it's a flop. Hate everything about it.

The opening game of World Cup 2022 (🕵️‍♂️) is this afternoon. I assume this thread will become the defacto commentary and discussion thread alongside all the ✨ discourse ✨

I'm supporting Saudi Arabia in this tournament. Quietly not that confident about the Argentina game.

US, Swedish, Finnish, South Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Columbian and Brazilian. And some others.
