Women’s Football (aka ‘Football’) 2022/23

Missed the first half. We just didn’t seem to be on it in the second. Possibly getting the record over in a friendly before the WC might not hurt in the long term, but I think the players will be down after that.
It’s all about Bouncebackability now.

England captain Leah Williamson and Euro 2021 top scorer Beth Mead both ruled out of the World Cup in July courtesy of ACL injuries :( Isn't that the type of injury that was under discussion in the run up to the Euros? Apparently notably more prevalent in the women's game than the men's?

Meanwhile, Lucy Bronze "limped off with what appeared to be a knee injury" in a Barca Champion's League match, Fran Kirby is a doubt having been out since February and Millie Bright has been ruled out for "several weeks" following a knee injury in March.

Not. Ideal.

I'm so sad for Leah. She's a brilliant leader. I think if we go into the WC without her AND Bright we'll be struggling to mount a decent campaign. I don't think the loss of Mead is a fatal one; since the Euros Lauren James has come onto the scene and Rachel Daly's been scoring goals, and Alessio Russo is now the undisputed leader of the line. But Williamson? Very hard to replace.

Last home game for the Blades today, a good 4-2 win against Sunderland. Great attendance too, 4,306, made for a decent atmosphere. Mia Enderby continues to be easily the sharpest Blade, hopefully we'll hang on to her. A pretty average season, all in all, but the new bloke seems to be a decent manager and hopefully we'll build on it next season.

Meanwhile, Sunderland were wearing the tightest shorts I've seen all season and their star players were so short it looked like she wasn't wearing any. The kind of kit Seppo Blatter would approve of.

Was at Palace's final home game today, 4-1 win v Lewes. Before this season I had never been to a football match before and I ended up managing to get to every home game except the 1 or 2 held at Selhurst Park (which is harder to get to for me whereas Hayes Lane is like walking distance) so pretty good going 😊 Really enjoyed it and looking forward to next season!
Here's a rare occasion of me managing to actually take a photo of something happening its Coral-Jade Haines scoring a penalty to make it 3-1 👍

England to announce their squad today, around 2pm.

Meanwhile, 50 days to go and apparently broadcasting rights for the UK (and other European countries) apparently still not sorted, after Infantino threatened a 'media blackout' if broadcasters didn't cough up what he thought was enough for a sport that Fifa have routinely undervalued in the past

Infantino said "disappointing" offers from the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany and France were a "slap in the face" of the players and "all women worldwide".
He added it was Fifa's "moral and legal obligation not to undersell" the event.

The World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, starts on 20 July.

Infantino said European broadcasters had offered world football's governing body $1m-$10m (£800,000-£8m) for the rights, compared with $100m-$200m for the men's World Cup.

Rights offers for previous women's tournaments were bundled together with other events including the men's World Cup, but Fifa has now separated the bidding process.

England squad announced - and there are several players not from the 'big four' for a change.

Goalkeepers: Mary Earps, Hannah Hampton, Ellie Roebuck

Defenders: Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, Jess Carter, Niamh Charles, Alex Greenwood, Esme Morgan, Lotte Wubben-Moy

Midfielders: Laura Coombes, Jordan Nobbs, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Katie Zelem, Kiera Walsh

Strikers: Rachel Daly, Beth England, Lauren Hemp, Lauren James, Katie Robinson, Chloe Kelly, Alessia Russo

Just caught the second half of City V Chelsea, what a nail biter.
City were defending a one nil lead with 9 players. Chelsea only scrambled an equaliser late on when City had another player off injured.

Good second half that. Five City players booked for dissent, two sent off, manager booked and Chelsea hit the woodwork three times.

Why not set the pools by proximity? France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany are within a coach journey of each other. Cyprus to the Faroe Islands is quite a distance.

I switched over to the FA Cup game, as the first half was so disappointing. Turned back to the England game just in time to see our first goal. Excellent second half, shame we couldn't grab a fourth. I must look up the permutations for the final round of matches.

great comeback, although I don't really understand this competition. Why did England need to win by 2 goals?

Also how does this affect the qualification for the olympics, when it is GB playing, not England?

My understanding is that as a GB team only exists for the Olympics, England were chosen as representing GB in this tournament which doubles as an Olympic qualifier.

The goal is just goal difference. If we finish on the same points as the Dutch, they'll go through.

So for Team GB to qualify England must beat Scotland by loads, and other results have to go the right way. The Scottish contenders for Team GB places will have something of an incentive to not only lose but to lose heavily. Can't say that seems fair on Holland.
