Why no contactless/Oyster card payment outside London?

Gatwick is a London airport

It's the same everywhere. I had a massive nightmare trying to get a ticket to Narita airport from the machines at Tokyo. They have competing services and you have to buy the right ticket and the right supplemental ticket to allow you to use the correct express.

it's like that at Gatwick, cos you have two train companies to get you to Victoria. I've been burnt by that.

Technically it's only one company, but that's a whole different story.
Why wasnt Edinburgh made a special case? Loads of Londoners seem to love going up there
Hmmm...Oyster card to Edinburgh? Maybe you ought to take it up with the Scottish Parliament? ;)

Manchester is supposed to have one, aka 'Noyster', but somebody (ATOS?) fucked up the project and now we don't.

You can buy tickets on your phone though, or with contactless at the machines, it's not that bad. Just no retrospectively calculated fares.

Then again it turns out London is only just getting round to integrated bus/tram/train/tube fares, so it's not like Oyster is perfect.

Leeds has the worst public transport system of anywhere I've ever lived. Fucking abysmal and super expensive.
the biggest city in Europe without a mass transit system. The narrow roads are gridlocked at rush hour. It is quicker to walk two miles home than get the bus if you go through Woodhouse/Headingley.
People get in their cars just to drive a mile or two when most of them could walk.
The roads are in a terrible state cos it would be so disruptive to repair them.

I read that as Narnia Airport. My world is now greyer.

but why not have similar schemes outside London?

First has been making noises about bringing-in a similar scheme up here for the last couple of years and have been trialing the system via a PAYG app but TBH, public transport is nowhere near as joined-up as in London, and I don't know how it works with the Stagecoach routes. so its unlikely to be anywhere near as comprehensive as Oyster, or offer any advantage over a traditional season ticket.

Other than that, the idea is a good one but needs somewhere with enough overall control of the various arms of the PT system to be able to knock them into line under a single payment system. Edinburgh/Lothians or the considerable area of the SPT (Strathclyde area) are the only two I can think-of in Scotland with the size and political clout to be potentially able to do this.

Also made worse by the two main bus companies (First and Arriva) having come to an agreement not to compete, with First doing the west & north of the city and Arriva the south and east. They got bollocked by the competition authority for this and one of them (the one who didn't grass the other up) paid a big fine, but the routes are still pretty much split as they were before. Shit if, like me, you lived in the west of the city and worked out east so would potentially need two day tickets from each operator (First did cover the whole of my route but few buses on the eastern part). First also tend to buy out any small local competitors that appear, as happened with Black Prince who started competing with them, particularly on the university route, offering cheaper fares in shabby second hand buses.

Theyve mostly fucked up the cycle 'superhighway' too, because they didn't want to cause any inconvenience to cars. Hopeless.

yeh but you should see how much we have to pay for replacement car keys too
I've just found out (got round to getting a quote today)
£150 for a new key, this means a trip to a VW dealer with my log book, photo ID and payment. Then a two week wait for the key to be delivered, then bring the car to the dealer and have the new key and my existing spare coded (this will kill the lost key for security). That's another £62.50 plus VAT.

Better news; I lost my Oyster card yesterday afternoon and had to ask to be released from the tube system at Hounslow West. I reported it right away and the new card with my remaining credit was delivered this morning. I'm well impressed. Yay TfL.
