White civil rights leader has pretended to be black for years

I think we are talking at crossed purposes here. I can resort to posting pictures or videos of 'mixed' people or I can leave you to do your own research.

I have acknowledged the issue is that he lied and wore toner or whatever. I still know mixed people that look like her or that have 'whiter' skin. So what. The point is she lied. Which is my point and which is the point of why this story is news.
Yes probably I am taking an inappropriate light-hearted approach to the thread.i suppose what I was trying to say is that the African people I know are pretty much on the ball when it comes to spotting a bullshitter.Discrimination is deadly serious for them. This woman who had no trace of African blood did not just have a few African friends she appears to have made a career/life among African people and to have been as far as we know accepted by them.

The really grim bit, if this report has it right, is that she produced 20 pages of pictures of lynchings herself:

Obviously racists could have still sent stuff to her, even if she isn't black. However this is the package which arrived in the post office box without usps date stamp. As such, it could only have been put there by her or 3 specific workers (none of whom the police suspect). That really would be fucked up.

Mebbe they knew and were just humouring her .

I've cousins darker than her for christsake . It's turning into a pisstake . There's very real and serious racism out there , people wholl kill, assault , discriminate , arrest etc on grounds of race . all this kind of stuff just makes a laughing stock out of it . It's insidious and self indulgent and simply shouldn't be tolerated . Middle class cack , the only arena were its tolerated .
Edited because am too pissed to discuss serious stuff.

If you go to some caribbean islands a fair few members of what are seen as locals are of very lite skin tone. If you did not know you would think of them as European tourists until they opened their mouths. Surely they are no less descended from the slave trade? Genetics can play funny tricks & can make for some awkward paternity issues when a child looks white with a black father or the reverse. I had a mate who was of mixed parentage & his child looked traditionally white. He used to get looked at like he had stolen the kid. On closer inspection it was obviously his kid but did not inherit his skin tone. He had to put up with a lot of sit especially when he was a stay at home (or out & about) Dad.

These are a mixture of 2 very ...very ..Irish families with a long lineage who've been round these parts since Cromwell chased them . They've never mixed with Protestants much less different ethnicities . Because there just weren't any to mix with . It's a wonder they haven't got cyclops eyes and webbed hands .

But they're still darker than yer one .

So would you say that Yellowman was white?

Or is he allowed to associate with his family & black heritage?

Did you study genetics at school? Dominant genes & all that can skip generations. Maybe your very Irish family had a bit of Spanish/Moorish in them after the failed Armada? When a few were shipwrecked on the Irish coast.

Possibly , and id like to think we rescued a few . But they aren't playing intersectional games with it . Which is the main issue .

As I edited before because I am a bit pissed I don't really want to discuss it but what do you mean by "we"

Dolezal might feel an enormous affinity to blackness – so much that she decided to identify as black – but her decision to occupy that identity is one that was forged through her exposure to black culture, not a fundamental attribute of her existence. Someone’s racial identification isn’t automatically less important than their gender in an American context, given our tumultuous history and the ways in which society’s perceptions of both either privilege or restrict one’s economic and social opportunities and mobility. But someone who crosses racial boundaries from a privileged one to a marginalized one is much more likely to do so for political purposes (as Dolezal seems to have done) or to profit from minority culture (as we’ve seen time and time again with white artists, like Iggy Azalea, appropriating black culture). Transitioning doesn’t often benefit trans people politically or financially; it benefits us because it is a way to begin to make our external presentation match our internal perceptions of ourselves, even as it is likely to disprivilege us socially and economically.

So this isn’t about being an ally, or making the family of your choosing, or even how one feels on the inside. It’s about, apparently, flat out deception. It’s about how one person chose to obtain a college education and jobs and credibility in her community. It about allegedly pretending to speak from a racial experience you simply don’t have. You want to live your truth, that’s not how you go about it. And it’s an insult to anyone honestly trying to do just that to suggest anything otherwise, for even a moment.

I can't help thinking what the future consequences of this (and the media beating this up in their usual uninformed ways) will be especially for mixed race people who already walking the surreal quagmire of a tightrope of being seen more this than that while often feeling/identifying an opposite way while still not negating any part of the mix in their heritage. Way to go indeed, Rachel! Now please fuck off!

Actually, wrong again. Other people put him there. He did strive for it but not to speak for white people or as a white person and crucially he did not misrepresent himself with intent to speak as a representative of white people. You really can't see the difference between lying on your CV to get a student grant meant for minority ethnic people to pursue a career as their voice and passing oneself as white because of of an emotional hangup (and one caused by the very social constructs that make it so difficult to be who you are)?

edit: that is if those were his reasons. last time I heard anything about it vetiligo was the reason but I can't say I ever paid much attention.

He broke my heart. When I was a kid Michael Jackson was like a real life superhero with amazing powers that he was using to tell the whole world to unite for peace and harmony

Imagine how upset I was when I found out that really he was just old some black guy who was into kids

My heart bleeds for you!

I can only speak for myself and I don't feel I am walking a 'surreal quagmire' of any kind with regard my ethnic identity. I know who my parents are. I know who I am. :)

Your second point though is a relevant one. One can only hope that 'any' consequences do not involve Mixed people of any phenotype being asked to 'prove' their Blackness.

so no one wants to answer my opinion that it's a silly story designed for morons?

It's a story which it's quite easy, and probably right, not to have an opinion about and not to believe that it poses larger, and important, questions. But that's not really the same thing.
