Whisky recommendations?

Anyone?

Offers notes of toffee, cherries, chocolate, nuts and figs throughout the palate.
No age statement on the whisky, monarchy concept: poorly aged.

Also, have they coloured it fucking yellow?

That's a massive win. Quarter Cask is my favourite. Still not tried select as I'm worried it will just disappoint in comparison.

Anyway I'm less flush at the moment so sticking with a bottle of one Aldis own malts. They're not bad for the money.
Select is decent. It's not a patch on Quarter Cask, though, so you may be disappointed.

Lot's of people by the look of it.

They've sold out of the limited run of 5000 bottles.

I'd have bought one for £85 and stuck it in the back of a cupboard.
And do what with it? The whiskey's probably mediocre at best and who the fuck cares about an engraved decanter?

That's the old marketing lie that something will be valuable just because there aren't many of them. Only if people think it's any good. Rare shit things are just rare and shit.

In a couple of weeks I'll be in Stirling, Perth and Newburgh. Can anyone recommend decent distilleries in the area for a visit?

And I'd be perfectly happy if you decide to give me a bottle as a gift!
Bought some on offer again. Didn't get quarter cask by accident this time, sadly. But I can report that yes, it's excellent. Not QC of course, but really good. It's still complex and peaty and lovely. You're right. It is gift quality.

How much was it on offer?

I've been looking out for Select recently, but haven't seen it with a discount. I don't shop in Waitrose though.

However got a bonus bottle of Quarter Cask. OH parents had ordered it for me for Xmas from Amazon and it never arrived, so Amazon sent another. Turns out it was with a neighbour. Very nice of them to give it to me now and not keep it for birthday. Especially as I'd just finished the cheap Alidi malt.

Not sure if it's been mentioned on this thread before, but Whiskybroker is a great site for getting some straight from the cask and unusual bottles at decent prices.

The 12 year old Caol Ila sold out quickly though, at £51.60. :(

I never thought to do this before, but comparing Waitrose's discounted prices to the best price on Amazon, they're consistently better. But their full price is way too much.

Cardhu Gold Reserve is £30 on Amazon, £26 discounted and £48 full price at Waitrose. The Ardmore (a nice lightly peaty one) is £29 on Amazon, £23 discounted and about £33 full price at Waitrose.

So my instinct for this was right. Waitrose's discount prices are very good value but never buy full price there.

Morrisons online is great for discounted whisky. Select is almost permanently on offer at £25, Cardhu at the moment is the same, and they've got The Ardmore on for £20.

Depends how much whisky I guzzle :D But yes, I'm driving on the way to distilleries, Mrs Forward will drive back.
North of Perth you've got a fair few.

Blair Athol. Dewars. Eradour.

West there's Glenturret.

Dalwhinnie is well worth the visit.

Pitlochry and Blair athol are well worth a trip to even though they can be a bit touristy.

Most of the distilleries provide the driver with a take home pack of all the whiskies you'll be tasting.

danny la rouge pogofish and Sasaferrato will have some recommendations as well I would imagine.

Thanks friedaweed and danny la rouge for all the recommendations. Funnily enough, I looked at that Lindores Abbey one, seeing as it's just down the road. But i was a bit suspicious as they seem to be trading on the whole "birthplace of whisky" heritage rather than their actual whisky. The distillery itself is only a few years old. Sure, you have to start somewhere but using so many hundreds of years in your main marketing struck me as iffy.

I am sampling the Tesco own brand 12yo Highland Single Malt. It's perfectly pleasant but nothing very special, a can't scare the horses whisky. Quite citrusy and a bit of almond. I'm trying to work out where it's actually from. Generally it's Whyte & Mackay that provide their own brands, so I'm guessing it's a Fettercairn. Perfectly acceptable for £23 full price.

Fancy that. Scots folk trading on the mystique of the wee dram :D

To be honest I'm not much of a Distillery hunter but if I'm in the neck of the woods of a dram I like I will at least got to the shop of the distillery. Once you've done a few tours you kinda get the gist of how it's made. The distilleries I do have really fond memories of though are more about their location that their copper pots.

A word of warning. Most of what you can buy north of the border is available online, and in supermarkets all over the world, cheaper than it will be in any Scottish distillery.

You are going there to make a contribution to Diageo the economy of local community though.

Have you been that way before Serge?
