Whisky recommendations?

I am sampling the Tesco own brand 12yo Highland Single Malt. It's perfectly pleasant but nothing very special, a can't scare the horses whisky. Quite citrusy and a bit of almond. I'm trying to work out where it's actually from. Generally it's Whyte & Mackay that provide their own brands, so I'm guessing it's a Fettercairn. Perfectly acceptable for £23 full price.
It's not a bad dram Fettercairn for a light, slowly sipping, all night one.

Fancy that. Scots folk trading on the mystique of the wee dram :D

To be honest I'm not much of a Distillery hunter but if I'm in the neck of the woods of a dram I like I will at least got to the shop of the distillery. Once you've done a few tours you kinda get the gist of how it's made. The distilleries I do have really fond memories of though are more about their location that their copper pots.

A word of warning. Most of what you can buy north of the border is available online, and in supermarkets all over the world, cheaper than it will be in any Scottish distillery.

You are going there to make a contribution to Diageo the economy of local community though.

Have you been that way before Serge?
Not that part of Scotland, just Glesca, Embra, Borders, Ayrshire and Dumfries (these last two on family holidays as my dad was mad for the Burns trail).

Have a friend visiting from Thailand this weekend. He usually brings a bottle of the good stuff with him, but as he is really busy and so will hardly actually be here this time, he thought he better buy a really nice bottle. Which seems a bit the wrong way round, but hey ho.

Highland Park 16yo Wings of the Eagle. Duty free only (and £100 there!) with harmonised notes of sweet figs, apricots, nutmeg, chocolate-coated marzipan and aromatic heather-rich peat-smoke. It looks fucking lovely. I am trying not to drink any till he gets back tonight.

e2a: 17:44 and I have had to just check if it requires an ice cube or a splash. It doesn't. I'm not getting the nutmeg yet, but it is fucking lovely.

Tomintoul Peated Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky | House of Malt

Very much enjoying this. Quite distinct and a good gateway whisky. Very gentle peaty taste; nice introduction to heavier peated whisky's like Laphroaig.

This is the good stuff.

Do 12 Yr old single malt become more valuable if you bought it 20 years ago? ( got a glenfiddich, currently costs £100).

Does this mean a) overseas whisky will get stupidly expensive? b) so get them at the airport duty free?

The amount you currently pay is £28.74 of Spirit Duty per litre of pure alcohol.

So say you buy a bottle of Scotch whisky that is one litre. Its ABV is 40%. Duty for a litre would be £28.74 x 40% = £11.50.

At £31.64 per litre of alcohol would mean at ABV 40%, duty would be £31.64 x 40% = £12.66. So the increase in duty on 1st Aug will be £1.16.

That’s on a litre for ease of calculation (I normally buy 70 cl), and assuming 40% ABV, which obviously varies.

So it’s not inconsiderable, but it’s not perhaps panic buying territory.

I've decided I like the Nikka Days.

I'd buy it again as an everyday whisky.

Polished off half the bottle already.

Got my eyes on a Mackmyra from Sweden next.
