Can anyone identify the critter? No droppings sighted.

It’s totally mousey. Plump, sticky up mouse ears, looks like a mouse

Yes, I’d agree. My initial guess was wrong. The tail’s too long for it to be a field vole. But it’s not a house mouse: the snout is wrong.

Field / wood mouse. Not a house mouse, pelt on those is more grey in my experience, and smaller ears]

We get them quite often, paying short visit. Rural area, with plenty of trees and shrubs in the garden.
[usually they go in the capture / release traps and get re-located a decent distance away, into a suitable / similar habitat.
