What kind of toolbox do you have?

I loved my arc welder. Sadly it was better than I was and I struggled not to blow holes in things with it. Very satisfying though to create a really nice looking line of weld.

These make the best sound in the workshop

That looks like a large tap, is it? dunno what the separate thing is, ??? what do you use it for?

Yes, taps for the bottom bracket thread on a bike (the main bearing in the middle of the cranks). The separate bit is a facing tool to make sure the edges are square, there should be two, don't know why it's only got one in the picture. When you pull the two parts apart to use it it makes an incredibly satisfying deep 'poink' sound like someone tapping the top of a big bottle with their palm

I took a look at a Triton today (A mongrel British motorbike with Norton cycle parts and a 750 Triumph engine), very pretty but the guy wanted £6,500 for it - there is no way at the moment. Anyhow reminded me of my youth and we had a nice chat about classic machines.

Apparently Lawrence of Arabia's Brough Superior SS100 1,000cc V twin motorbike sold recently at auction for more than £100k ..... I hope the buyer appreciates what they have bought!

That is presumably quite a big thread, does it often need tapping? ... Do you ever use helicoils on bikes weepiper? often used to have to get bits and pieces helicoiled on Japanese motorbikes as bolts were often shearing and having to be drilled out.

Yes and yes. It's about 2" in diameter and because it's under a lot of strain and in a place where it can easily seize it often needs tapped.

The only thing we particularly use helicoils for is the thread where the rear derailleur bolts onto the frame - these days the thread is usually on a replaceable gear hanger but older steel frames can be fuckoed if you strip the thread and the only way to save the frame is to drill it out and fit a helicoil

I used to have particular trouble with hydraulic brake bleed nipples shearing. It was something to do with the combination of the material of the nipple and the particular alloy of the brake caliper, they were always shearing and having to be helicoiled.

Probably the most odd work I did was a complete top end strip of my Suzuki in an alleyway behind the bedsit I was living in at the time. I had to shelter me and it from the rain with a tarp but managed to get the barrels off honed rebuilt with new rings and running again in quite short order and went on to ride to John O'Groats that Friday. Necessity is the mother of invention!!

:)

I had a red metal cantilever, a blue cantilever, and a black plastic cantilever. But I had a lot of tools in those days.
