I think there might be the guts of one really great album in the Christian stuff.
With that in mind, I've been listening to the Christian albums over the past couple of days. The playlist for a hypothetical "Best of the Christian Years" will drop real soon now. . .

Every Grain of Sand is a strong favourite of mine.
The best of that era, easily. It’s a decent album as a whole, Heart of Mine is great too. There’s some good stuff on Slow Train Coming, not sure if I can bring myself to listen to Saved again though.

Changing of the Guard should be on any such comp, I’ll just note.

Yep, it's all pretty great, best thing he's done since.....the Christmas album, which I really love too :D

I must admit, I'm not with you on that one! After reading Sean Wilentz's book I understand why he might have wanted to make it, and it's got a kind of quirky charm, but the CD is on the same dusty shelf as Saved and Down in the Groove!

I'm astounded by this, its just fantastic, best thing I have personally liked by Dylan for decades:

Musically it sounds like a Van Morrison outtake from Astral Weeks but with better lyrics than Van’s come out with recently - even if some of the rhymes are a bit cringy and “American Pie” in places 🙂

Best of the Christian Years, Side 2

  1. Man Gave Names to all the Animals
  2. Pressing On
  3. Lenny Bruce
  4. Groom’s Still Waiting at the Altar
  5. Caribbean Wind

What do you reckon, godless sinners of urban75?

What I mean is, do those ten tracks actually "gel" as an long player ensemble?

Mr. McTell has been "dealt with". What would you suggest in place of CW?
I have just listened to Saved for the first time in well over thirty years. I now see why you chose Covenant Woman.

To be fair, it’s not as bad as I remembered, at least side one isn’t.

I think Slow Train and Do Right To Me Baby might be the next best, but I can see a strong case for including something else from Saved. In which case I think I’d go for the title track. It’s not genius but has a joy and passion that can be denied.

e2a: just listening to the outtakes on Bootleg Series volume 3, Ye Shall Be Changed or Angelina might be worthy of consideration, they (and a couple of others) are half great tracks, but not quite the complete product.

For my money the two Dylan LPs I still listen to are “Bringing it all back home” and “Desire”. The rest I’m not that bothered about as, while they have the odd good track, he’s all about the words when I prefer the tunes (which are scarce..)

A mutual liking of Bob Dylan is one of the reasons me and himself still enjoy (tolerate) each other’s company.
Desire and Live at Budokan continue to be especially dear to me for bout 40 years.
Just listening to Shot of Love as I didn’t recognise some of the track titles posted above, even though himself plays it a lot.
