VR headset Oculus Rift

Pretty good, visible pixels though obviously and for some reason blacks were coming out quite mottled. Still, 100% better than the TV in the hotel room, it's a massive boon for working away. And now even North West Donegal has 4g mobile I'll be able to keep myself entertained...

Some fun games to be played too, Esper 2 and Omega Agent leading the way currently. I'm not gonna be the best to comment on motion sickness as I'm pretty immune to it in real life on boats etc...

Still think I'm more tempted by the Vive than the Rift though, even with the cost. Having played it the other night the room-scale tracking and the tracked controllers really do make it. Sighting down the sights of the gun in your hand to headshot a zombie was hugely satisfying...

Well the Oculus Rift came out today. I'm waiting to see which hardware is better for my needs, and which hand controllers prove to be better. But happily the new software for the Oculus that came out today does seem to mostly work ok with my Oculus Dev Kit 2, and they mentioned supporting it for the rest of this year. So that (relatively) modest investment last year has not totally failed me now, I can join in the fun somewhat.

There is not an insane quantity of software available at launch but there is a fair amount, and I'm somewhat lacking in time, so it will probably take me all week to explore it. I wonder what app or game will be the first to actually get me to spend some money.

And they've had their first privacy and advertising related mini poopstorm already:

Facebook's Oculus hit by fears it will spy on users and pass on data

Facebook’s VR firm, Oculus, is fighting to combat suspicions raised by its privacy policy and terms of service that it will spy on users’ activity and pass information to third parties.

The privacy policy warns about “information automatically collected about you when you use our services”, including “information about your physical movements and dimensions when you use a virtual reality headset” which may be used “to send you promotional messages and content and otherwise market to you”.

It was first highlighted by news site UploadVR, which pointed out that “an ad executive at Coke, for instance, could tell just how long you stared at the Coke bottle cleverly placed inside your favourite game as an in-game ad and use that data to better place it in the game for you next time.”

There are other aspects too, involving how much control they have over user generated content, but I won't quote any more of that here.

Shit like this is why I was pissed off when Facebook bought the Oculus. It's not the kind of behaviour that's unique to Facebook by any means, but generating advertisement revenue is pretty much the lifeblood of that company. All that social networking stuff that a lot of people think Facebook is about is just a means to an end.

Any doubts that Occulus Rift will fail has just stopped with the announcement earlier in the week that the porn industry has 1500 films ready to go in that format. Prone has always been the driver of tech (vhs v betamax and forwards where there has ever been a choice of mediums)

I'm sure a much cheaper headset will do just fine to watch filth. Remember this needs some serious hardware to power it...if Sony allowed it on the PS4 mind...

I've splurged a bit. Bought The Rift and The Vive. Just got an email from Oculus saying the delivery will be delayed due to 'component shortages'. This has to be the shittest product launch in history.

Both! Very nice.

Have you got the Vive?

I've reluctantly concluded that I will have to wait till the Oculus hand controllers are available before deciding which consumer system to get. Reviews I've seen so far suggest the Rift is more comfortable than the Vive and text is clearer, but I dont know if the Rift hand controllers will be as accurate and reliable as the VIve ones and it would be expensive for me to get this wrong. Especially as I'm not really into VR with standard game controllers that much, it takes away from the immersion although obviously works fine for certain game types.

Ditto, although I'm leaning Vive. The Touch controllers do look good, but to get a proper 360 standing experience, you'll need a 2nd camera on the other side of the room. Also the cable on the Rift isn't long enough. Also Lighthouse is a fundamentally better and more flexible tracking technology. Also Valve seem to have a better attitude towards consumers than facebook/oculus.

I've got about 2x1.5m clear. 2x2 if I push the coffee table over. Should be enough.

I can't get the DK2 to work at all. I'm probably doing something unsmart. I've downloaded the runtime (0.8.0.0), and have up-to-date Nvidia drivers. I've got a steady orange light on the headset, and a blue light on the tracker, but no image and the world demo won't run.

If you get bored with stuff that runs on 0.8.0 then note that you can use the DK2 with 1.3.0 (or 1.3.2 or whatever its up to now).

I have to admit, it's all confusing the hell out me. Do I just run the oculus setup from the main site as though I had the consumer rig for that?

And just to clarify that I think its worth the effort of doing it because then you get almost the same as the consumer experience - the proper home screen, store etc. And there are some free things on there, I haven't spent any money yet although a few offerings are tempting me.

Also given I don't really know your exact setup and that technical things have evolved rapidly since 0.8.0, make sure you have latest graphics card driver.

Hmmm... so I've upgraded to 1.3.2, which is working well. But now the old things that I liked on 0.8.0 don't work anymore . I'm considering rolling back for a while unless I can find a workaround.

Must say, I'm tempted to get the consumer set if I can afford it sometime. It's all very wow and 'new frontiers'.

Any recommends? (particularly keyboard operated, as I haven't sorted a controller yet ).
