Vault 7 - Massive Wikileaks release on CIA eavesdropping

I wonder if this is computer nerds of the libertarian/gamer gate variety motivated into releasing stuff damaging to the CIA because the CIA appears to be at war with their hero Trump?

I'd kind of like a CIA vs. fuckwit libertarian war, so the rest of us can all plan the revolution while both are distracted.

They can listen into my telly all they like ...

This made me recall, as an electronics bod, ordering "Spycatcher" at my local library - didn't glean much from that - except the trick of tuning into your target's local oscillator to find out which frequency they were using - though recently I was reminded that this sort of thing was well known in WW2 where wireless use in linen and dope aircraft had to be kept to a minimum.

Thence to Wikimedia where I discover that the 330MHZ excitation frequency used to power the bug hidden in the US Embassy in Moscow is described as "microwaves" - I recall hearing stories about people getting sick because of it. It's no more "microwaves" than a garage door opener or wireless doorbell - or mobile phones or old school TV...
Doubtless this is the sort of thing that helped spawn the tinfoilers who think next door's WIFI is out to get them.

Who said anything about mind control? The kind of "bad guys" we should actually be worried about are smart enough to discuss their devious plans in rooms free of electronic devices. Putting backdoors in consumer devices is an exercise in gathering low-hanging fruit. Not that it would necessarily prevent even incompetent terrorists from carrying out attacks - did blanket surveillance prevent the Glasgow airport jokers from carrying out an attack in 2007?

Sounds like religion to me.

Just again to emphasise that in my opinion it matters that there's a difference between "The CIA lost control of it's arsenal" versus "Wikileaks has ensured the CIA lost control of its arsenal". It's amazing to see the delta already in effect and echo-chambered across da intewebz. No doubt that will be The Story on this thing now. Perhaps it would have been better if we the public didn't know that the CIA had lost control of it's bag of tricks.... because then we'd be safer somehow.

Or mebbes 'fake news' interesting how TTTs Russian connections have lost their place in the headlines since his accusation that Obama had managed to tapp his seriously crossed wires, and now this?
Coincidence, obviously.

If Wikileaks sources have got hold of this gear on a highly qualified but essentially amateur basis, it does ask the question of how much of this info was already extracted by the organised and well funded professional hack agencies ? Wiki may be just disclosing what those in the business already know about anyway

Also- the point above is valid- the hacking of phones and tellys will invariably catch the low hanging fruit in this game- the hapless vicious wankers who are plotting an outrage with a downloaded terrorism manual. yes, these are still a big risk - maybe more of a direct risk as they are feral and we shouldnt underestimate the power of the Tipton Taliban - but the professionals further up will be likely skilled enough in their trade to avoid falling into many of these traps.

edit- I see nox has used the term low hanging fruit already. Oh well.

With wikileaks involved, their spiel is the documents are their news, and they seem legit. Certainly more legit than pretty much anything the media's been obsessed with for the last few months- lots of mud thrown, assertions made, and then talking as if established fact but fuck all substance.

If you say so, but wasn't this the same source that started the HC email witch hunt? That dropped another tidbit in the FBIs lap just in time to cause a bit more Shyte?

Not saying stuff can't be timed... but it only hits home because of substance, rather than stinky media farts and far-out conspiracy theories featuring big scary Russia that we're all more than used to believing in. In comparison the whole Trump/Election/Russian influence thing lacks any substance but is an amazing exercise in fantastic strategic story-telling backed up by full-spectrum repetition and talking heads like politicians and (giggle) journalists looking serious while saying stuff.

I've seem people who I thought were reasonably intelligent lapping it all up, day after day, week after week as the plot is brought along while we all look on like nine-year olds around a camp-fire, mouths agape "what will happen next!". Wikileaks comes out with- y'know, actual stuff- evidence and that, and apparently that just doesn't compare and only besmirches the good name of a great organization that does much good in the world to keep us safe. or something.

Fair enough, but it's a case of balancing a load of information and trying to be objective, just seems wiki leaks drops its 'Shyte bombs' just in time to deflect attention away from the latest scandal involving TTT?

the cia don't develop these cyber weapons to catch domestic terrorists, it's about attacking iranian infrastructure. some background

Ten years ago, if you had said that the CIA was spying on you through your television, that would have been considered unthinkable, and you would have been dismissed as some tinfoil hat wearing fanatic.

Kind of shows how far we have become inured that this is considered unremarkable now.

What else are they up to?

How many TVs had microphones and internet connections 10 years ago?

On the other hand, common devices with microphones = mobile phones:

People have been worrying about being spied on via their mobile phones for ages leading to people taking the batteries out of their phones or leaving them outside when they are in meetings.

IIRC the wikileak vault7 release describes the TV hacking being done physically via USB stick - and if the CIA could be bothered enough to do that then they could equally well just plant a bug like they have been doing for the last 70 odd years.

I can't find that?

Well also revealed is that the CIA could take control of cars remotely and crash them.

I can think of at least one high-profile assassination that fits the bill on that count.

I wonder if they could do it with aeroplanes.

Vault 7 contains a document which includes the following lines:

2014-10-23 Branch Direction Meeting notes

"Potential Mission Areas for EDB" [Embedded Devices Branch]
"Vehicle Systems (e.g. VSEP)"

It doesn't say what VSEP is. I can't find anything talking about taking control of cars remotely or any other details at all.

The following is from the wikileaks press release:

"As of October 2014 the CIA was also looking at infecting the vehicle control systems used by modern cars and trucks. The purpose of such control is not specified, but it would permit the CIA to engage in nearly undetectable assassinations."

Wikileaks don't detail how they have concluded that "Vehicle Systems (e.g. VSEP)" are "control" systems (as opposed to, for example, in-car entertainment which might also have microphones or GPS data etc which could be monitored).

Nowhere is any mention made of the CIA actually being able to "take control of cars remotely". The bit about "assassinations" is Wikileaks speculation and not based on anything more than the two lines I have quoted above.

Yes, it's not like we would ever get a president with tendencies towards the slightly fascistic or anything.

Incredible how people still think that any of these gross invasions of privacy are acceptable, very many of the people who seem to think that they are alright seem to be able to simultaneously believe 1) Trump is a fascist or something similar 2) the only reason the security services, who report to the 'fascist', would ever spy on someone is because they have done something that they shouldn't have been doing

Incredible how people still think that any of these gross invasions of privacy are acceptable...
Presumably a fair number of people think that invasion of privacy is acceptable / legitimate if it is genuinely being done in the course of combating serious crime or terrorism or defending strategic national interests and if it is subject to democratic control and legal oversight. In fact a lot of people seem to accept far more extreme actions that mere 'invasion of privacy'.

I'm not sure I understand why you find this "incredible".

You don't understand how Trump changes things re: legitimacy and democratic oversight?

I feel so much safer now that the security services are less able to spy on potential terrorists.
They should devise a relevant punishment for the morons who release data like this.
I think it's less about what's being leaked and more about who's leaking it.

There's is undoubtedly a need for secrecy within the security services and I don't want low-level fuckwits like Manning and Snowden deciding what should or shouldn't be handed over to Wikileaks and published on the Internet.

So yes, I agree that whoever has leaked this stuff should be caught and imprisoned for a long time.

Manning was clearly a whistleblower and without her, we would never have seen this.

If you wish to punish Manning, then, since you would rather she had not leake this, you wish to cover this up. If you wish to punish people like Manning then you want to cover similar atrocities up.

You don't understand how Trump changes things re: legitimacy and democratic oversight?
I thought we were talking about the general public's (eg US/UK/other similar/western countries) attitude towards the work of the security and intelligence services? Whether they think 'invasion of privacy' is (always/sometimes/never) acceptable?

I agree that a change in beliefs re why things are being done (ie evidence that it is not for sufficiently serious or valid reasons) or a change in beliefs about proper democratic control / legal oversight being properly followed could well lead to a significant change in public sentiment.

Obviously the situation in the US is raising a lot of issues, but there is an interplay between the different agencies involved, the new executive (and its claims about the previous one), congress, the courts and also overseas interests/allies etc. I think it is too early to say exactly how things have changed, it is difficult to know exactly what is going on behind the scenes and I don't think that there has really been any massive sea-change in public opinion yet.

Re. this Vault 7 stuff, having had a bit of a random browse I am feeling a bit underwhealmed although I am really glad Wikileaks has published the following CIA secret cyber weapons:
