USA v Portugal (Group G) Sunday 22nd June

The World Cup is supposed to be the rest of the planet's holiday from them. I feel uncomfortable about it.
I was listening to an American podcast earlier and to emphasise how big a deal it is they said "it's bigger than the Superbowl". Well it does involve entire continents worth of teams, rather than a few cities... :D

To be fair, they also said it was bigger than the Olympics, though I'm honestly not sure about that.

Should have been 1-1 there

To be fair a decade ago this would have been a landslide win to Portugal. They are holding their own against a higher ranked side here.
12 years ago, USA beat Portugal 3-2 in a World Cup group match... :hmm:

Me too.

I understand that the US is a football underdog, but i also love seeing the US get their arses handed to them on the international stage. Americans win so often, and come to expect it, that it's sort of refreshing to see American supporters go home disappointed, no matter what the sport. I especially hate the fucking "U.S.A." chant of American sporting fans.

I don't really either side to win, but Portugal to go out would be lovely lol

Eta not really Portugal as I love the place, I really mean Ronaldo

They sure use a different language.

"64': GOAL GOAL GOAL USA!

IT’S TIED 1-1! JERMAINE JONES! FROM OUT OF NOWHERE! Beto was frozen to the ground on that blast!'

Does anyone remember the early days of The Guardian's "Fiver" email that used to endlessly take the piss out of American soccer?

Tennesse Powerthrusters 4 - Milwaukee Earthquake 3

etc

It was funny.

You can't knock em for chanting the name of their country ffs :D

Spanish telly just called fans "North Americans", presumably wary of latino sensibilities in ethnic minority areas of Iberia.

I think Latin Americans call them Estados Unidenses. Well it looks like they are now closer to getting through to next round.
