The TV & films lonely post thread

T & P

|-o-| (-o-) |-o-|
Won’t be that distraught if this doesn’t take off, but in a similar vein to the Lonely Post thread in General, I thought it’d be useful to have a place to share one’s musings on something that doesn’t merit a thread of its own.

To get the ball rolling, I increasingly feel that flashbacks have somehow become indispensable in most series in this golden era of TV drama, compared with great series of the past- sometimes spanning the entire length of even multi-season shows.

This is not a criticism by the way. If well written, a flashback-based story can be superb. But it certainly feels like it’s the de rigour device of modern script writers. Sometimes it can be confusing as well in the early episodes of a series as you’re unsure which character you’re now seeing as a youngster or child.

I used to watch the Magic Roundabout as a kid. I watched it very regularly but it felt weird. Definitely a love hate thing going on there.

Watched Dougal and the Blue Cat as a young adult. Liked it. It's definitely its own thing.

And yet barely a year later they reeled you back in with Pocahontas 🤣
Don't knock Pocahontas, it taught Avatar everything it knows...

I never made it through The Lion King. Hated the songs, I thought the visual style was ugly and I didn't care for another Disney villain of the period being strongly coded as gay.

Hadn’t considered the homophobic element before. Personally I think the animation has held up pretty well, but it hasn’t politically held up well at all. Came just after the even worse Aladdin too.

As a grownup (who also enjoys plenty of children’s films and series, mind), I have enjoyed plenty of Disney and/ or Pixar films, as well as been left cold and sometimes bloody hated plenty of others (the Cars ones are an abomination and wrong’uns in more ways than one). But the one film that I will happily watch again and again, has perfectly stood the test of time so far, and is pretty much flawless in my book is the wonderful Ratatouille. My all-time greatest Disney/Pixar film in fact.

Anyone seen the Disney version of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame?
I’ve not, but I did think it was odd of Disney to adapt it as the story has very adult themes - sexual jealousy, infanticide, religious fanaticism. They must have really gutted the story and missed the entire point of it to make it suitable for children.

Try searching for 'IT', as I did once when wanting to discuss the horror film of the same name... :D

I went looking for a Moby Dick film, swerved at the Worthy looking Gregory Peck one and found a 1998 TV movie with Patrick Stewart as Captain Ahab. Get in.

I once let a kid I was babysitting look up her favourite television show - Bad Girls. She was quiet for such a long time, I went through to check on her, and discovered what a mistake I'd made.
