The Islamic state

It's rather depressing how this thread has descended into name calling and insults. I was finding it rather interesting, especially as there are few people here in Istanbul that are capable of discussing this objectively.

Fair enough. But when I see people planning to send money to the PKK, I reserve the right to tell them what a bunch of murderous loons they support. Every single Turk I know would do the same.

Now I really am off to Mexico. Hasta la vista companeros...

hopefully not for the drugs because i hope you don't need me to tell you about the cartels...

my first thought was covert/SF stuff taking out the big guns but I've nothing to base that on other thn suspicion
It's been destroyed and awaiting re-reinforcement/ran out of ammo/ there are people fighting to capture them.

If the first then they know they will get destroyed again - it depends how much artillery they are prepared to have destroyed and now many beardies. The latter, then, diff game.

Summary of yesterday from YPG.

Backed up that the big explosion yesterday was an ISIS vehicle borne bomb that YPG/YPJ spotted and fucked. Suggests the mount once under ISIS control is now challenged.

Incidentally, or perhaps not, the CHP has now changed its position and supports limited intervention to relieve Kobane.

Then again, the CHP isn't particularly influential these days.

Probably too little, too late in any case: Turkish press reports IS in control of one third of the town this morning.

“As for rebuilding of our internal peace; the AKP’s [the ruling Justice and Development’ Party] exercise of detaining our Kurdish citizens and deceiving all of us until it realizes its expansionist delusions – which is called ‘resolution process’ – turned out to be hot air,” he added, referring to the government-led Kurdish resolution process, which has become endangered upon pro-Kobane street protests across Turkey.

Another bit of backstabbing by the Turkish govt, like I said earlier, why negotiate when ISIL can provide a more permanent solution.
The Turkish States behaviour towards the Kurds is very similar to the US govts behaviour towards the native Americans.

oh dear oh dear. so you'd condemn legitimate self-defence against eg police or fascists

No, I said I'd condemn all actions of violence against civilians or non-combatants, no matter who's carrying it out.

I don't class police or fascists as civilians or non-combatants, at least when they are acting in their capacity as police or fascists, so I can happily condone legitimate self-defence against eg police or fascists without any problem or contradiction.

Happy?

not really as your definitions seem wholly idiosyncratic and without any real meaning.

for anyone interested in the nerditastic game of top trumps, the truck mounted guns in the video are ZU-23-2 23mm anti-aircraft guns. in service from the 60's onwards, simple design, effective/accurate(ish) range of around 2km/2.5km, explosive ammunition - they make a mess of anything that isn't well armoured,

You just don't like my music because you don't understand it.

Or is it you don't understand my music because you don't like it?

I'm pretty sure it's one of them, anyway...
if your definitions don't stand up to examination and have to be changed to prevent you looking like a twat then they're not much use.

What happens when they run out of ammo? Can/are they be hacked to do/use other stuff? Are/were there huge stores of original ammo?

More where they came from though - and if they are scrap, then the new gear needs to get there. And to get there they come from raqqa. And if they come from raqqa...an open road...

perhaps the US's comments yesterday about 'being afraid that Kbane is about to fall' is a come-on to IS - turn Kobane into a talismanic battle for IS, and watch them fall into the trap of ploughing resources into winning it, and use airpower and the open road as a meatgrinder?

IS's lack of Artillery may have something to do with yesterdays air ops - the US had 3 B-1's over the town yesterday, just loitering away looking for targets and dropping on them... the fighters are much more limited by the 1000 mile distance between the UAE bases/carriers in the PG, they don't have the fuel to hang around, and they can only carry a much reduced warload in order to get there. if the could fly from Incurlik on the other hand...

unlikely to run out of ammo as they are the same calibur as the guns they mount on technicals, the originals in afganistan coming from stripped down aa guns and put to use as anti personal heavy MGs. Might as well ask what will happen when they run out of AK bullets mate.

e2a
More likely for there limited use is difficulty keeping pace with the technicals in their blitz manouevers and heavy fuel cost.
