The Islamic state

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...cked-into-the-violence-in-syria-10408595.html

This is worth a read.

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has denounced Isis as terrorists, but, in almost the same breath, has added that the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian Kurdish ruling party, the PYD, are just as bad.

A Syrian rebel offensive led by Jabhat al-Nusra was allegedly masterminded from an operational headquarters inside Turkey and was the outcome of a closer understanding between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Robert Ford, the former US ambassador in Damascus and vocal supporter of moderate Syrian rebels, said earlier in the year that the armed opposition is now wholly dominated by Isis and al-Nusra, which differ little from each other.

'For local warlords to capitalise on a good reputation as providers for their communities, and thereby attract further funds from external donors, they must ensure law and order. A semblance of good governance is likewise critical to building credibility, while extraction from local communities has to be kept to a minimum.'

Following on from the discussion of governance with frogwoman & butchersapron, here's a useful piece on Warlords & the Political Economy of Conflict from Norwegian NGO Noref examining the conflict economy of Syria and the revenue streams regime & rebels utilise to fund their campaigns & govern their claimed territory.

'In the final analysis, there is a strong correlation between the emergence of a new class of war profiteers and the promulgation of violence.'

Erdogan will finally, finally allow American planes to hit ISIS from Incirlik.
The decision to allow U.S. warplanes to use the Incirlik air base in southern Turkey is one element in a broad cooperation plan first broached nine months ago. Additional elements — including expanding U.S. airstrikes into the western part of the border area and using Turkish military ground spotters to guide them — are being discussed and finalized.

The Incirlik deal was sealed in a telephone conversation Wednesday between President Obama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

how can you burn someone alive?

can someone please tell me the thought processes/beliefs that allow you do that/watch that?

honestly, that would cause me PTSD type symptoms if i saw that.

how do you arrive at that?

Brits aren't safe anywhere in the world these days, not even in Britain. Thanks a lot, Tony Blair.

So who are non-UK citizens being killed by IS and related factions in various parts of the world supposed to blame? Blair is an easy answer for lots of lefties, but the reality is far more complicated than that as I'm sure you know.

so your taking up turkish citizenship is in the way of protecting yourself i suppose. being as it's safer than the american i imagine is your other option.

Turks aren't much safer than Brits or Yanks. London isn't much safer than Istanbul. The whole world is a battlefield these days.

That's why neo-imperialism is a really, really stupid idea. It's not like the nineteenth century, when Europeans were largely sheltered from the consequences of their foreign adventures.

Blair put his citizens directly in the front line when he co-operated with Bush's criminal invasion of Iraq in 2003, thus contravening one of the most basic purposes of government. Governments are supposed to protect their own people ffs.

I don't think many Brits understood that at the time, but they ken the noo.

This is the logical development of the old empires system - cept rather than conflict being means to an end, the product itself is conflict. IS are just a franchise of an existing corporate brand anyway.

The whole IS setup reminds me of a supercharged pyramid \multi level marketing scheme anyway.
Did you read that spiegel article back in April?
Secret files reveal the structure of Islamic State
But when the architect of the Islamic State died, he left something behind that he had intended to keep strictly confidential: the blueprint for this state. It is a folder full of handwritten organizational charts, lists and schedules, which describe how a country can be gradually subjugated.

no.

but will now

what is interesting to me is the underlying capitalist side of the business. I have commented on the organisation of the oil business before, but the more I look at what is going on, the more I feel the slavering recruits are being duped into what is effectively a war of rescources and cash. I was looking at the money laundering side of things earlier this week - there are some distinctly un islamic things going on with th ill gotten gains
