The Islamic state

Thats dreadful:facepalm:
That's the new one - it's largely correct if not particularly detailed. The one before was an ISW sourced one with all dates stripped off - at a guess i'd say it was from october 2014 when ISIS was at it's syrian heights, before the YPG push back, before the rebel advances in the north and south etc. An embarrassing and revealing fuck up for any paper, let alone one that prides itself on the seriousness of its foreign reporting.

I came to listening to radio4 this morning to hear the half witted announcer say IS had retaken Kobani, after a quick WTF fortunately the guy he was interviewing put him right in no uncertain terms.

Brecher on the latest YPG/J victory with some links to nice maps

Hers's his piece on the probs the recent victories may bring (if this gets paywalled someone let me know please) - they loved death yesterday gary:

The War Nerd: The YPG’s new problem against Islamic State is... Victory

So you Daesh love death, do ya? Well, you remind me of a line my Okie friend Kenny’s mom was always yelling: “You sure don’t act like it!”

If you Daeshies wanted death so badly, all you had to do was dig in along Highway 6 and wait for the Kurds to show. It didn’t take a giant military brain, guys. William friggin’ Westmoreland could’ve figured this one out: You block the road, dig in, and fight to the last man. I mean, duh!

There was no mystery about the Kurds’ battle plan: As soon as they consolidated their hold on Tal Abyad, they’d start south down Highway 6. Even a small force of defenders, well dug in and genuinely ready to die for the cause, could have held up a lightly-armed force like the YPG/J for a lot longer than a week. Hell, one Soviet battalion could have blocked that road for a month. What am I saying? One company could have blocked it for longer than a week. It takes a while to wipe out a whole company of soldiers who are genuinely willing to fight to the last man, even when the attackers have air support.

Death toll in Kobane has reached 146 civilians. Some of my Facebook friends are sharing some pretty horrific pictures, I've had to unfollow loads of them.

Tweets about a mosque in Kuwait has been bombed, IS claiming responsibility.

- & a tourist hotel in Tunisia attacked by gunmen, 13 dead so far.

Have no idea which thread to post on about the 3 (so far today) probably co-ordinated attacks - including the kobani, close villages, ay-al-arab-, al-hasakah stuff yesterday. If all isis linked shows they're really under pressure.

I read a piece one year ago when people were panicking that ISIS were going to take Baghdad, a phrase (or something like it) has stuck in my mind - ramadan is killing month for ISIS.
