The Gymnastics has started!!

The Olga Korbut routine is fantastic.

That stuff makes me cry it's so inspiring!

:eek::cool:

Did you not like the Comaneci one as well?

As an ex-gymnast, maybe you can explain why some of Korbut's moves aren't used in professional gymnastics?

I haven't watched the other one yet.

I have no idea why those moves are not integrated into the standards.

Little Big Dreams is starting on BBC HD now.

Its a documentary about a famous (or should that be infamous) gymnastics training school.
Aldebran was talking about it on the Age of gymnasts thread.

Its a pretty brutal/ rigorous 5 year training regime.

E2a- I cant even watch it again. Id forgotten the pain and hurt on this little boy's face as his father delivers him to the school and leave him crying. The boy had just turned 5. :(

There is a coach who is very liberal with his cane. :(

He is really annoying and says some total arse things:rolleyes:

He is a former blue peter presenter.

He just seems a little too enthusiastic, or something.

Something about him convinced me that he must be gay. I checked wikipedia and it said otherwise, but I sensed him on my gaydar.

:hmm:

And, actually, one more thing:

when I was in high school, after I quit track and then throughout university, I had what I'd call a sort of disembodiment period...I was active compared with many, but compared with how I had been...this huge gulf opened between my brain and my body. And I seemed to live - rather ambivalently - on the brain side.

When I came back to performing - and to the physical rigors of that world - the gulf began to disappear and life (and my body) became...lighter...as in more full of light.

:)
D, I really enjoyed reading about your emotional musings :) I love your sense of self and how you describe your experience of physicality.

The female gymnasts are looking much more powerful in the shoulder and thigh in the past few years.

They actually look powerful and older now, more like women than like pre-teen girls who have have their puberty stunted.

As a group they seem taller too.

Other countries compete their girls younger. British Gymnastic's selection policy means you cannot go until you are 16.
:) V wise IMO

Replay of the men's team all-around on BBC now.

China won the team gold, but my goodness the Americans have some stars on their team!

Fabulous to watch Justin Spring and Jonathan Horton on the high bar.

It sounds wise to me, however do you think they will be forever playing catch up with Romania, Russia, Ukraine etc because of that?

If everyone followed the rules of the IOC instead of falsifying records then they would ALL be over 16...
sadly Im of the firm belief that Chinas female gymnasts are almost all under 16. I have an 11 year old and a 13 year old daugheter. Not one of their gymnasts looks as old as my elder daughter- most of them resemble my 11 year old.

I caught some very edited highlights this morning before work, mainly the Chinese gymnasts, but also a couple of Americans. Saw the poor US bloke nearly come off the pommel. Must have been so gutted :( There was one Chinese athlete on the rings who was just awesome. He barely moved when he was holding various postitions, incredible strength!

Waves at foamy :)

Ive just watched that poor American girl foul up 3 times, once on the beam and then two huge mistakes on the floor. Poor Alicia Sacramone :(

They have been brilliant though. I love how 'solid' and strong the Americans sound when they are tumbling or jumping on the beam.

i just watched her land on her bum coming out of the flying arabian and i thought to myself, "if that had happened to me i would have turned it into a backwards roll with handstand"

yeah, right, not in the last 15 years :D

Its amazing how things have changed, Russia fighting it out with the Romania for bronze.

In the days of my particular favourite Lilia Podkopayeva (all around champion in 1996), Ukraine was in amongst them too.

Loved Daiane De Santos too, she'll shine when the individual events start. She's miraculous on the floor.

Watched most of the ladies team event and i concur you do feel for the American lass Alicia Sacramone who did the made a blunder at the start of her beam routine. Didn't see her blunder on the floor element and it was certainly strange to see Russia out of the medals in a women's gymnastics team event final. I reckon it's got to be the first time that they haven't made the podium. Also Romania who are highly consistent in this event and have been on the podium for the last 9 Olympic games.

I was impressed by the Chinese men's team for the technical excellence on all of the disciplines. The guy on the rings who showed terrific poise, balance with great upper body strength - plus the dismount was nailed to a tee. I remember the Chinese lad who made a blunder on i think it was on the bar and his team finished 3 or 4th in Athens 04 - he flet that he let his team mates down. But i was pleased for him and his tears of joy was plain to see.

"We're sorry - NBC is required to restrict this video to viewers in the United States."

*trots off to BBC site*

Missed it all, just watched the last 1/2 hour of it on digi and only saw the Chinese, Americans and Romanians.

Was Daiane De Santos the black Brazilian girl I saw a few days ago?
