age of female gymnasts....

I agree with Jon that the age of gymnasts is an interesting issue, but its not always as simple as sexualisation. Rather (as has often been the case) it is the opposite: young bodies reduced to machines for sport, radically de-sexualised (missing periods, drugged with hormones to promote/arrest muscular growth etc). Olympic "ideals" are a spurious fig leaf for brutal machinic training regimes, nationalistic politics, and grotesquely profligate capital. The IOC is as corrupt a regime as that of China itself...

Btw, I think the smarmy thing about what he's saying, is that they are deliberately tarting up these teenagers. I don't think that's right.

But another thing. I suspect that Jon isn't the only man in the world who has watched olympic gymnastics, and had a sexual thought. And it has nothing to do with the age of the performer.

I cant be bothered to reply to any of your points properly as they make no sense and/or fail to disagree with what I have said.

Except...

Who said that I had a "sexual thought" when watching this? How do you define that? WTF are you talking about?

Similar to teenage models, both on the sexualisation and the punishing regiemes they would have to put their bodies through....

*Waits for fashion heads to start accusing me of paedophilia or "not understanding catwalks" - no? phew...*

Troll or not, you make me queasy.

Sickbag Melinda?

Jazzz, watch the gymnastics, you will see that most are strong and healthy looking.
We were discussing this on the other gymnastics thread, and its just the Chinese teams and maybe the Russians who seem traditionally small.

As for the rest of the world, the days of gymnasts looking under fed and deprived are hopefully gone.
They have to survive heavy schedules, and immense physical strains- they need to be powerful as well as flexible.
Modern routines have been as influenced by advances in men's routines as they have by the ultra feminine aesthetics of the 70s.

If you compare shoulder size and thigh width of modern gymnasts and their 70s counterparts, the modern girls look stronger with greater muscle develpment.

ok I'll have a look - you're right I probably haven't seen much of it for a few years :)

WHY??? What have I done? Just commenting on the oversexualising of young teenage girls. Hardly the first person ever to do so. Which particular part of this are you all objecting to?

If people just keep insinuating that I'm some sort of pervert I'll forget about this thread. If you wish to expand upon your criticisms, I might respond.

If you knew the first thing about gymnastics you would realise that its nothing to do with sexualisation whatsoever-in fact its likely to be the opposite. These girls train for hours every day, usually 6 or 7 days a wek. Popping out to see a boyfriend is a rare occurence.
The older Gymnasts I know are far less sexually experienced/aware than non gymnasts.
Leotards are designed so that the gymnast can move, like swimmers they have to wear skintight outfits for maximum flexibility/.agility. Have you ever really looked at the body shape on a gymnast? most of them have muscles to the Nth degree, very small busts, 6 packs etc.hardly your average gorge womanly shape. Not a push up bra in sight
I know! Lets get them all a bloody floor length robe and fit cameras underneath to judge their body position...seems you are a bit obsessed. Been oggloing I take it?

so were only referring to chinese gymnasts?
I hope so because I can assure you not one of those things happens in the UK... gymnasts train and train- on their own merits without abuse or co-ercion and there are stringent checks in place to ensure that excellence in coaching is achieved.

Ohand you know, I hope you can back exactly what you are saying. its rather sickening as a coach in the UK to be reading your ill informed nonsense generalising like you are

Read the rest of the thread, hissy.

But no, I dont know the first thing about Gymnasts (male or female), their sex lives or training regiemes. Nor do I care.

I was more referring to the fact that a paedophile could easily tune in to oggle. And the make up/skinny costumes do little to deter this.

If any of you cant see this to be the case, then you are fucking morons who should not be allowed out of the house unaccompanied. End of fucking story.

and like I said.. we should put them all in outfits they cant move in to deter anyone who might tune in and see their bodies? How should we judge their form? By CCTV feed on goggles to the judges just in case? Should the swimmers all wear full length outfits too? ( they do for sporting performance reasons BTW- just as gymnasts opt for leotards)

Get real. You sound like one of these blokes who claims women shouldnt wear anything revealing without asking/deserving to be raped in an alley

Perhaps we should dress up everyone in big cardboard boxes and make them try and do gymnastics like that.

That'll stop those pesky perves.

I believe I made that exact point earlier in the thread.

Clearly he isnt getting it then!
I know! Lets have all the events behind closed doors and judged by robots if they involve any tight fitting clothes, us pervy public just cannot be trusted

There are female paedos too.

There might be all manner of paedopersuasions tuning into the the Olympics.

Better get all those youngsters covered up because of the paedos.

seen the bum flesh though? can't have been avoiding it hard enough. makes you a bit.... :hmm:

Blimey.

and the older men too, I mean, Im sure there were enough laydees looking at the physique of the divers or swimmers this morning. They might feel violated or something:rolleyes:

My niece does gymnastics, I'd like to take the opportunity to say I have never looked to see if there is any bum flesh, or whether she has a camel toe, whilst watching her perform.

Yes, there could be some paedos tuning into the olympics to have an ogle, but they are just as likely to be ogling someone who lives in their road, or plays on the swings in their local park.

Furthermore, I suspect when commentators talk about them being young, it is not out of some bizarre desire to fire the bellies of any paedos that just could be watching, and more likely to do with having to find something to talk about, and it is actually quite interesting (and inspiring?) to hear that competitors are achieving so much at such an early age.

i reckon there's more than a grain of truth in it but beware the power of the tabloid telly machine.

I have no first hand insight in the functioning of tabloids nor have I any knowledge of whatever can be found in them.

I have first hand knowledge of viewing a serious documentary showing living Chinese todlers and their living parents and their living torturing trainers.
You can always believe it doesn't exist and it was all acting (including the performances in public where they were pushed to take part in for the greater glory of the schools) if that is a comfort to you.

salaam.

The point has been made that this is not the same for ALL countries competing in the games.

Yes, it is absolutely appalling that kids should be treated like that, for a governments desire to be the best.. but it's not all like that.

I was talking about Chinese kids, remember? Yet I have no doubt it happens in many other countries just the same.

salaam.

What do you think about ballet dancers Jon?

What do you think about all those people who go to watch ballet?

What about when there are young girls and boys in the cast?

Hey Aldebran :)
By some co-incidence right after you mentioned that documentary yesterday, it came on TV here. It was called Little Big Dreams or something (I mentioned the actual name on the other gymnastics thread). It made me cry- 3 and 4 year olds clinging to their parents as they are left behind at boarding school was impossible to watch without shedding a tear.

The living conditions and dorms werent bad, but the training was rigorous to say the least. THe family and institutional pressures on the featured 9 year old boys was monstrous. It did seem like torture/ cruel, but only if you watched it outside the context of what a child's life is like in China in general.

Th documentary explained that corporal punishment in all schools was standard, with beatings for minor infractions. Teachers have total authority- it was explained that a child's first duty was to the state> ancestors> the school/ institution> family. ALL came before the voice of the child.

It is a different way of childhood; parents repeatedly stated that spoilling children leads to wasted, selfish adults and that enforced hardship in childhood was essential grounding for life. It is deliberate.

In that context, the gymnastics school isnt out of place.

I found the seperation of children from their parents hard to watch- but then remembered there are boarding schools here that take kids from 7.

Who said shit about banning shit? Who said shit about anyone covering anything up? Can't someone state that something is being sexualised without saying that every woman should wear a burkha? Please stop putting words into my mouth.

Paedos are gonna oggle. They could, in theory, stop the make-up, make the leotards into leggins etc etc. I know this isn't gonna happen and wasn't suggesting it.

People on this thread seem to be a bit thick.

just wonder, all those people who are accusing me of being some mysogynistic prude, averse to female flesh, where do we draw the line with children? Breasts? Bums? Vaginas? Willies? Hardcore fucking?

Will any of you even acknowledge that there just maybe some people wanking over these young girls?

I think I suggested the leggin routine, if we were to take it that far (which I am not suggesting that we should...). I think this is covered by ballet attire

Big fucking Jump there. And what of the person who suggested that young girls might not wear such sexualised high street clothing? Is she suggesting that they deserve to be raped in an alley?
