The General Election 2024/5 thread

But - just because you live outside your country of citizenship, does that mean you surrender your citizenship and your rights as a citizen?
If you haven't lived there for a certain amount of time, sure, I don't think you should have the right to vote there.

Time to get over it.

Not really sure how that's relevant but yes, of course. I also have an Irish name and Irish heritage. Diaspora and all that.

Good for you. But you aren't a citizen. This is the heart of the matter - Irish citizens don't lose their citizenship living abroad and we should have the right to have some say in our country's direction.

It's not a question of getting over it.

Hang on, you don't actually mean that citizenship is surrendered due to extended residence outside the state?
Is not being able to vote somewhere surrendering your citizenship?
You mean you're. . . Scotch?

What's Nicola Sturgeon really like? And have you seen the Loch Ness monster?
I want to hear about the leprechauns!

Well no, not good for me. You asked a question, I answered, it's what it is. I just find it weird you're all so invested in voting, never mind voting in a country you don't live in and may not have lived in for years.

Anyway, going to leave you all to it as I've stuff to do.

But it would be ridiculous if there were more people outside Ireland voting in Irish elections than people actually living there. (Obviously dependent on where lines were drawn but that isn't that ridiculous given the numbers.)

And just because you're from a country originally, doesn't mean you should necessarily get a say in how it's run.
That would probably wipe out the recent election/referendum results in Romania, Georgia and Moldova

Typical arrogant Brit, coming into the Ireland Forum and continuing centuries of oppression by expressing an opinion

You find it weird that someone cares about what happens in their country? Being able to vote can bring about change, just because you aren't currently living there doesn't mean you automatically aren't Irish. It doesn't mean you stop caring or having an interest in its future.

No? Ok. How about those who care about what happens in a country that they haven't lived in, like South Africa or Palestine or the US etc? Who wish for change, despite not living there? Is that weird, too?
