The Eagle landed 50 years ago: Apollo 11 anniversary thread

One thing that watching all the footage really highlights is just how *dry* coverage of things like this was then (I am not necessarily saying that this is a bad thing, however). These days you'd have some computer generated mockup with a rolling hourly update on what was happening right now and going through details about the mission, and interviews with big names in science and various celebrities.

I've watched this today. It's really good and has given me a lot more context around the whole thing. I had a tear in my eye quite often - it's incredibly moving and inspiring,

The one (?4) about Apollo 8 had me glued to the screen thinking 'wow'.

I'm too young to have experienced the moon landing live and the only thing I have that is vaguely comparable is all of us crammed into the living room that Felix Baumgartner jump out of a rocket and fall back to Earth, but the tension and excitement must have been immense in the 60s.

They had a similar form for their "per diem" expenses claim. ("Starting point: FLorida, Travel to Pacific Ocean via The Moon" or somesuch) :D

Sadly all my books are in storage else I'd have posted a copy of it here.

Listening to this. Which is about Jodrell Bank's part in the space race. Fascinating stuff from Tim O'brien, and Eno soundtrack.

Tracking the Space Race - BBC Sounds

The most amazing thing I learnt, was there was an unmanned Russian craft sent to the Moon at the same time. It crash landed on the Moon whilst Armstrong and co were on the surface.

Yes I didn't know about that until I watched the Chasing the Moon docs.
