The dog thread is better than the cat thread, because it features dogs.

Just a little heads up re pet insurance. I recommend you check how your insurance treats any emergency treatment if your OOH isn’t in house. Ours are being so tricky and I really regret moving to them.

We’ve got a continuing claim for Lucy and had to take her to the emergency vet. Despite eventually accepting this was a continuation and related to her sarcoma, they are still deducting a new excess because it was a different vet. I’ve argued that it’s my vets emergency provision and an extension of their service but they’re not having it.
My vet is appalled and I’m going to the ombudsman.

I know it’s ‘only’ £200 quid but honestly fuck them for making life even harder when we’re dealing with a terminally ill dog. 😡

So yeah, check your policies.

Fuck sake Looby - which insurer is that?
I don't have dogs but it's something that anyone with a pet needs to be aware of.
I was always with petplan (although I got Jakey when he was older and he isn't insured, more fool me) but with the other 2 cats I never had any issue with petplan, they always paid, and they did so direct to the vet, so I didn't have to find the money in the meantime and then claim it back, all I had to do was sign the form the vet printed out. When you are standing in the OOH vet hospital waiting room in floods of tears because your cat has had a massive seizure/stroke the last thing you want to be doing is fucking about wondering how this is going to get paid for - same goes for any animal and related medical situation.

And yeah you don't need to be dealing with insurance quibbles when you want to be focusing on the time you have left and trying to make that as loving and positive and stress free as possible. :(

That's weird Looby , which insurance is that?
Ours are 1 excess per condition per year (goes to doublew check the new one for the young one as it's a new company)

The policy is actually pretty good.
For life policy, I think 10k per condition per year and one excess per condition per year too. No co-pay unlike other policies where you have to pay 20% of any claim for older dogs.
They also cover some pre-existing conditions.

My own vet do direct claims but the OOH service don’t so I paid out £300 and have had £100 back.

I had no idea the excess would apply for referrals to other vets including specialists and hospitals but even so, I don’t think this applies as it’s an extension of my vet service albeit a different company.
I’ve done a detailed complaint to the ombudsman.
Once Lucy is gone and Albert has a new insurer, I’m going to trash them everywhere.
Not constructive and it won’t change anything but I’m so pissed off.

Aye be careful with excess terms and conditions, because ideally an excess should be per condition - so if you get a referral to a specialist or a hospital from your regular local vet you should not be charged another excess, it should be part of the same claim (or an ongoing claim if you had to fill in more than one claim form).

This is well worth knowing and thanks for letting us know which insurer is causing you this bother at what is already a stressful time for you.

Much love xx

Ta
I might just look into it as senior here is over 7 now and his life policy with the ongoing cancer scans is now north of £150 a month.
But I will check the small print.
e2a: assumption 2 means he can't get covered and keep being covered for the cancer so no good for him.

My boy has had very inflamed paws for about two months. Bloody exudate leaking out levels of inflammation. Despite spending £600 on tests the vet doesn’t know why.

My question is, obviously he on the main hasn’t been walked. They are largely but not completely better, and he no longer seems in pain, but he is very reluctant/refusing to walk. Like he hides under the table if you get the lead and you have to drag him legs splayed towards the door. Seems ok once out, limps a bit at the end of a walk over 30 mins.

I feel so guilty not walking him, cos in my mind good dog ownership requires you to walk your dog. Is he just out of practice? He’s always been a home loving and slightly reluctant to go out dog, but he’s usually been tail up wagging and up to 12 miles before this. I’m not sure what to do for the best?

I don’t have much for you other than sympathy — that sounds horrible. I’ve also felt really guilty in the past when they’ve had to not walk for their own good.

I would be careful about setting up a walk as a battle of wills that he loses. It might end up in him developing a real fear. Can you coax him with a treat? And then keep it under 30 minutes for now because you don’t want the walk to become painful. By the time he’s limping, it may have already been painful for longer too, so maybe do a few 20 minute walks in the day?

All stuff you’ve already thought of, I’m sure. Mostly, I just want to say that I’ve also been there and it sucks.

:( poor little sausage :( was he allergy tested?
Yes that was one of the tests, and mites, thyroid, infection…

Thanks kabbes was hoping you’d reply. Good advice x

The kabbess describes a comedy moment from this morning. She was in the bathroom getting ready when Ted came rushing in. He had obviously been doing his usual rubbing up and down the washing basket because on this occasion, he had managed to get his head through the strap of a dirty vest top. He had this thing dangling down from his neck, tripping him up and he was whirling round in his usual fashion, which was making the vest top whip about. Boo had been hanging out in the bathroom with the kabbess, and now found himself in the middle of a dog-vest top whirlwind, which did not please him so he started loudly complaining to management. Just another moment of clumsy dog/grumpy cat chaos.
