The dog thread is better than the cat thread, because it features dogs.

My main concern is that other dogs are being twats to him; he got bitten by a springer last week which was really out of character for the spaniel - I've known him for a few years & he was always v. friendly with Nico. Is there a vibe he's giving off? Having said that, he didn't have any problems with other dogs on the beach in Cornwall, maybe because he was off lead and could just run off?
We get this. Ted just seems to be like the unwelcome drunk in a pub that others try to warn off but he doesn’t take the hint and then somebody ends up punching him. I don’t know what it is because to my eyes, it looks pretty normal interaction at first. There is just something about Ted that other dogs don’t like. It’s got better in this last year so maybe he’s just growing out of it a bit? We’re still really cautious every time we come across another dog though, because so many have just gone for him from nothing, clearly to the surprise of the owners.

Yep, exactly that - both me and the owner of the spaniel were really surprised. It's got to the point that Blue now hides behind my legs if he sees any other dogs - he tripped me into the road last week; scared the shit out of both of us as we missed getting hit by a car by mm. Plus a mouthful of abuse from the driver.

It was something I was acutely aware of when I had Cosmo - it only takes one incident to change how an attacked dog behaves in future. Really difficult if you've got an aggressive dog - even putting them on the lead you can get dogs wandering up to them to say hello.

I never really worked out the etiquette on that one - if Nico was on a short lead and another dog came bounding over and Nico had a pop, I kind of thought it was the other owner's fault?

Yep you can't really control them more than being on a lead. I wouldn't say other owner's fault though - just an unexpected situation for their friendly dog.

I met an owner once who said "you cost me £200 last time I saw you, your dog bit mine on the ear and it bled so I had to take it to the vet" I apologized profusely and said I'd got insurance so to give me his details but he said no and continued to be grumpy with me quite understandably really. He then said that his dog (a large lab) was aggressive to any dog he saw on a lead, which made me realize that Cosmo has been on the lead and his dog hadn't (I hadn't remembered the particular occasion but I always tried to get myself between Cosmo and a dog that came up to her). Eventually he softened and we came on good terms. Cosmo and I were in the woods one time after that and I heard this pounding noise and I'll swear the earth was shaking and the lab suddenly appeared and made straight for Cosmo, luckily I just got in between them in time.

Another time a couple of little fluffy things bounced up to Cosmo so I got her on the lead. The owner laughed and said "no, no, they're ok" to which I replied "yes, but I'm not sure mine is :)"

The last dog she bit was two or three years ago - a huuuuuuge rottie that ran up to her and took her ball off her. The rottie was superb, just stood there as she tried to hang off his ear and I tried to get her under control. Luckily the owner who was also huge said it was his dog's fault for nicking the ball.

Sweet FA is Blue neutered? I assume yes as he's a rescue but that's the only thing I can think of.

Cara just got attacked by a dog that ran into a gated dog park with no collar, harness or human. Human eventually arrived and got hold of his dog but had no lead to put on it. Made noise about having dropped it and scanned the grass. Then held the dog on his arms so I could leave. I said no way, cos it could easily slip his arms so he carried out the park and I saw him walking it down the street completely free. I don't think there ever was a lead. Speaking to other dog owning neighbours, cara isn't the first his has gone for. I have reported it to the police.

She's got a nasty bite right under her eye. Mm away from her eye :( And I only noticed when I got home that I got bit on the hand. I did feel the dog get me as I tried to separate them but pulled away and didn't feel pain so thought nothing of it. Adrenaline

It's just as well she likes other dogs because as of tomorrow she'll have a playmate. Laika is on her way from Spain and we'll be picking her up from the man in a van at a service station tomorrow evening. She's on the right, 4 months old. That's all we know.

One week in. They do a lot of this when they're not sleeping so I think they like each other in some weird way.

Omg that sounds really scary, I hope you’re ok! And that Cara is :( Thank god it didn’t damage her eye. That must have really shaken you both up x

Sweet FA , some unasked for advice...
only use your new ‘special magic recall cue’ when you KNOW the dog will return to it. Always set him up to succeed. So, if he’s running around a wide open space and in his joy, or highly stimulated by other dogs or a chase, don’t use the whistle unless you’re pretty certain he’ll see you and the piece of cheese you’ll reward him with as more gratifying than what he’s doing right now. Obviously, if you’re worried he’s away from you and want to try to get him back then call his name or wave your arms. But try to keep the cue that you’ve started to work on as one that will only ever be successful. Which could take time.
It helped me to see ‘recall’ as developing and strengthening an unused muscle.

I really recommend the book ‘Total Recall’ by Pippa Mattinson. Even if you end up not following the advice through to the end, I think all dog owners would get a useful insight into how dogs work and how you can make your lives together more comfortable and harmonious from it.

Apart from some Pedigree chum & dried food (plus joint & denta sticks). I have no idea what Ben ate / drank yesterday.
He's a water drinker ... but dirty puddles are for splashing into.
But I could sell his farts to porton down for chemical warfare this morning. One just before bedtime last night was almost stripping paint & wallpaper.
