The dog thread is better than the cat thread, because it features dogs.

45 mph. i know you know this, but it's still amazing.
I've been pretty glum for a few weeks - depressed af if I'm honest. Taking Blue to the beach or like today, a wide open but safe area, is like injecting optimism into my eyeball or something. Feeling him quivering through the lead; watching his ears go up; seeing his eyes trying to focus on something to chase; the way all the muscles in his back and haunches suddenly tense; saying go; feeling him launch and then the unbelievable speed of him 😍 A right tonic as my nan used to say. I can't really explain it but it makes me feel intrinsically and inexplicably excited and happy watching him run and then him coming back for a cuddle, panting and grinning like 'did you fucking see me? how quick was that? :D It's like a magic trick or a superpower: from skinny looking doofus to absolute laser guided machine in seconds. He always looks a bit surprised too which cracks me up.

Looking for advice about training please dog threaders...

A couple of weeks ago in Devon, I had him off lead on the beach and it was awesome. He was much more comfortable around other dogs as he had the choice whether to play or just run off and he clearly loved the freedom. I had a slightly hairy moment when he disappeared into the dunes but as soon as he realised he was on his own, he stopped running, giving me a chance to catch up - when he saw me, he came sprinting back in a bit of a panic. I had treats with me and reinforced all his good behaviour.

I met someone on the beach who said high value treats were the way to go so the next day I took some leftover steak with me - he was so into it, he wouldn't go for a run and when I took the lead off he just hung around, drooling for the steak he could smell :D

Another issue is that he covers a lot of ground in a short space of time so he's fucking miles away before he realises he can't see me. Even when I'm bellowing like a maniac, he can't hear me on a windy beach. Plus he's not 100% sure what his name is...

He did react to someone else using a whistle on the beach though - he could hear it from miles away & stopped and looked every time he heard it.

I had him off lead again today in a walled area and he was brilliant - came back when called - but we were the only people there and there were no other distractions. He'd also just walked for an hour so was pretty shagged out anyway.

Basically, how do you train dogs for recall? (I never even tried with Nico as he was so fast and his prey drive was so high, he was a liability anywhere else except the track ❤️)

We use a whistle. She will come back when called but sometimes my voice isn’t strong enough. A whistle cuts through it and always gets her attention

Do you think he knows?
Ha no, not at all. As it turned out, he had quite a nice day. Morning walk with Sid, his mate. Bit of a lie down on the sofa/ in my bed for a few hours. Another walk with Olive including sniffing and peeing on lots of crab pots. Dinner. Evening walk down the lane where he found half a dead bird. Gave it to me at the gate and got fussed for being a good boy.
10 minutes out barking. Now flaked out in bed.

For me and Mungo, recall (such as it is) is a mixture of training, bonding and management.

We’re still a work in progress but he’s mostly off lead and mostly likes to come in to me when I shout.

The training part; when I first got him I used a whistle and delicious food reward. I started with him next to me. Blow the whistle (I used 3 pips) and put sardine in his mouth. Did that a few times over a day or so. Then gradualtly increased the distance between us, so like him in the sitting room, me in the kitchen. And then me in the kitchen him in the garden. And then me in the garden him in the house. Once I felt he was ready for us to try this outside, I had him on a long line and tried it in the park where we walked. And then again gradually increased the distance between us both physical and mental. I spent probs 4 or 6 weeks on this process.
