The dog thread is better than the cat thread, because it features dogs.

I had Cosmo put to sleep on Saturday. She started getting arthritis in her back legs (the alsation in her) about six months ago and went downhill really quickly. Last couple of weeks she was finding walking really difficult and the last week she couldn’t get up on her own.

Friday when I lifted her up to go out she just wasn’t interested, didn’t want to eat (a first in 12 years) and just lay on the floor clearly unhappy. She gave a bit of a bark (another first in 12 years) usually in the middle of the night when she wanted a drink of water or to go outside. Was clearly time which made it easier for me.

I’d contacted a vet who did house visits and she was great, came out on Saturday morning. It was all very peaceful and I buried Cosmo at the bottom of the garden.

So she didn’t suffer a lot, and was telling me what to do to the end. Am concentrating on the nice memories of her, she was sweetie and did well for 15 years.

oh, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, what a sweetheart she was, she looks full of love.

A few months ago, when I told the vet that we were going to bury our cat in the garden, he said, that way you know where he is, which I found very comforting.

Sorry to hear that two sheds it’s always so sad when they go.

It was definitely time. Our family dog was the same. Slowed down and lost interest. Couldn’t get out of his basket one day, stopped eating. Died the next morning, shortly before my parents were going to call the vet.

Thanks all :) She was really independent - I think I've said that when I first got her she'd go upstairs when I was downstairs and then when I went upstairs she'd go downstairs again. Because she'd been pulled around so much by her owners' kids when she was a puppy she hated being fussed, if I stroked her too much she'd give a 'harrumph' and get up and go somewhere else :D That was built into her by the time I got her and it didn't change over the 12 years.

I realized over the last year for both of us really it was just nice knowing that the other one was there in the house. She had her own spot behind the sofa in the sun, so we weren't in each others' company a lot of the time. I notice it most at meal times and walk times, but I'd prepared myself for her going over the last month and particularly the last week.

Sooooooooo - how are all our dogs getting on? We want photos we want photos.

New hound arrived yesterday :) Though I got overruled on the name and he's called Blue :D

He doesn't have a clue about anything - never been in a town, only been in houses briefly and infrequently. He only raced for 6 months & was last on the track in July. He's very unsure of everything - took a while to get him into the house but eventually coaxed him into the front room late last night. Ultimately, greyhounds gotta greyhound, so he's worked out where his beds are and has made full use. I think it'll take a while for him to settle in but he slept from midnight til 7am this morning which is a massive win.

Gradually getting closer...note bum not quite on the floor; ready to dash off at any second...

Made it indoors as far as the kitchen...cheese may have played a role...

Resting his muscles in the front room...8 hours after arriving at the house...

Me and my pinhead hound on a wake and bake walk this morning. Was lovely to be up and out at tit o clock in the morning with this doofus.
