The thing is there’s not enough time to react when people holler at you, so I’d prefer it myself if people didn’t bother
You really can’t win when you make people aware on your bike. I usually use bell but I said on your right as I was coming past one old fella, clearly takes his walks seriously and that led to him getting a bit upset.
Stopped and had a chat with him, left on decent terms I think and explained that some people get mardy about the bell. Ended up both complaining about essex footpaths and roads before heading our seperate ways
That's pretty impressive. I've done a couple of hundred milers but not at 15mphdid my longest ride ever yesterday. 150 miles. averaged just under 15mph.
my LBS phones me to agree any additional work over the cost of the service first. I take it they haven't said what the cash is supposed to cover.I’m no good at tinkering with bikes, so I booked my bike in for a ‘gold service’ for £150 - just had an email back saying it will cost £280, which I cannot afford.
Anyone got any advice for what to do?
This is what they said:
Gold Service £150
Includes collection and return
A Gold Service is recommended annually as a great way to ensure your cycle is in peak condition. this service is good for preventing components seizing in place and gives reassurance that a full complete service of the cycle and all components has been undertaken .
* The bike will be fully stripped down and all component parts will be cleaned, inspected-lubricated, and refit
*All inner cables will be replaced with Stainless steel cables
* Hydraulic brakes re bled if necessary pads removed and inspected
- Hubs and Free Hub Body stripped and serviced where applicable
- Bottom Bracket removed and inspected
- Headset stripped and inspected
- Wheels Trued
- Any parts purchased will be fitted free of charge within the allocated service time.
Have I misunderstood something or are they trying to rip us off?
Aye, that’s how I understood it too. In fact, you might not have noticed that I edited the post to include the rest of the bumf: Any additional cost will be discussed before work is carried out.my LBS phones me to agree any additional work over the cost of the service first. added to say what's listed in their email wiuld in my view be included in the service rather than extra overs. especially if you're paying 150 quid in the first place.

They didn’t say. What other work are they doing?
No, not for meLots of stuff like new brake pads, cassette/chain, gear indexing are possible for non-mechanical people. Just look at videos on YouTube.
They will presumably have replaced worn drivetrain bits etc which will be the source of the extra cost. But they should have ok'd that with you before starting. Did they not discuss it with you when you dropped the bike off? You should have had a clear estimate before they started and if they came across something after they started which needed replaced (which does happen) they should have called and got the go ahead first. They didn’t say.
The message they sent:
We have completed your Gold service your total bill is £280 then we applied the 5% discount it is £275 when would you be available for us to return the Cycle for you
280 minus 5% isn't 275. It's 266.They didn’t say.

Ah. I'm afraid that's partly your misunderstanding and partly their fault for ambiguous wording and not actually giving you an up front total estimate then. The only parts cost included in their description of the service is the cable inners. It says extra parts will be fitted as necessary without incurring an extra labour charge but it doesn't say that the cost of the actual parts themselves is included.I did tell them the brake pads and cassette and chain needed replacing, but they didn’t tell me it would be extra. C’mon OU. That’s over 100 quid easy.I did tell them the brake pads and cassette and chain needed replacing, but they didn’t tell me it would be extra. They didn’t mention any extra charges

I don’t know that though. £150 seems enough to cover everythingC’mon OU. That’s over 100 quid easy.
150 for a service does seem like a lot.I don’t know that though. £150 seems enough to cover everything
An SLX 11-42 cassette is £80 RRP by itself. And an HG601 chain is £35If it's the Trek:
SLX 11-42 cassette: £45
GRX 40t front chainring: £50
Mt-201 pads: £15
HG-601 chain: £25
=£135
Though it's taking the piss somewhat. I mean the front chainring probably didn't need doing. And those are obviously just retail prices for genuine Shimano I've pulled off the internet. And of course they should phone up and check before any extra fees at all.
Also wtf is up with chainring prices?
150 for a service does seem like a lot.
