The current situation in Venezuela

US murder machine at it again...

The first UN rapporteur to visit Venezuela for 21 years has told The Independent the US sanctions on the country are illegal and could amount to “crimes against humanity” under international law.

Former special rapporteur Alfred de Zayas, who finished his term at the UN in March, has criticized the US for engaging in “economic warfare” against Venezuela which he said is hurting the economy and killing Venezuelans.

US sanctions are killing Venezuelans, says former UN rapporteur

No doubt the USA will be bringing democracy to the north of South America in the not too distant future.
Again!

The Guardian has this story about a US "aid" convoy being stopped at the border by a barricade:

Venezuela: first US aid trucks arrive at border blockaded by Maduro

While the containers and fuel tanker that block the road seem to have been newly installed, what the Guardian doesn't say is that this border crossing bridge has never been opened. . .

¡No Pasarán! (I'll see if I can find a better link later).

Another link that confirms that the crossing was never open:

Things really are fucked in Venezuela.

One thing is opposing US interference and Guaidó's role in it. But Maduro is a total fucking idiot and to see people on the left defending him and standing up for his shit corrupt regime is sickening. He is no advert for modern socialism - mega inflation, mass protests, mass emigration, jailed political opponents, food shortages and hospitals with no medicine. International solidarity with the people sure, but his regime is dying and good riddance.

Whatever happens in the next few weeks, this is the end of an era.

The US sanctions and interventions are obviously shit, but I'm struggling to work out what's going on among all the propaganda from both sides. One of my friends shouts indignantly 'He's the elected president!', then I do a bit of googling and find that basically both sides have been failing at sticking to the constitution since 2017 so there are no elections that everyone regards as valid. You would get the impression from some leftists that this is all the work of the far right, but Guaido, shit though he may be, doesn't appear to be on the far right - his party is in the centrist Socialist International with the Labour Party. Maduro is clearly shit at running an economy, but US sanctions seem most at fault for the current starvation, although Maduro denies the starvation exists. Having failed to follow the whole saga closely for the last few years it's really hard to find stuff that isn't propaganda for one side or the other. Anyone got a good summary? :D

There are surveys mentioned on the wikipedia page for Guaido that say he has over 80% support in Venezuela. Anyone know who the surveyors are and if there are any reliable surveys?

I found this interesting although I dare say she is "right wing".

Also this one, although a few years old.

Thanks - the NLR piece was interesting in particular.

One thing I'm frustrated with at at the moment is the left who want to defend Venezuela against a 'coup' but don't suggest any way forward except the US should end sanctions. Which it should, but that won't undo the damage that Maduro has done or the fact he no longer has a clear popular mandate, and it won't make him the right person to sort out the mess once the country can trade again. Him and Chavez have mismanaged the economy under the banner of 'socialism', and that was always going to come to a sticky end. So what next? I guess internationally we should take our cues from movements on the ground in Venezuela but it's not clear who wants what. Is anyone suggesting a left replacement for Maduro to try and resolve the crisis?

Koch brothers sue Venezuela to collect $409 million

WASHINGTON (AP) — The capitalist Koch brothers want the socialist president of Venezuela to pay up.
Two companies that belong to Koch Industries, the energy conglomerate of the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, are suing Venezuela to collect $409 million awarded by an international arbitration panel.

This from 2017, but a search for Koch and Venezuela shows that this has been dragging on getting more acrimonious. I think this will definitely have a bearing on how this will unfold.

Maduro's calling the coup a failure, Guaido's live streaming on YouTube calling for further street protest tomorrow.

BBC saying that therether a plane sat on the runway ready to go to Cuba (have they no imagination?), but that Putin vetoed it...
