The building your own portable soundsystem thread

Yeah, I found that I can't get the parameters for the speakers I like, which is well annoying.

I found out you double the volume if you have two in one box. Simple.

I got my amp today and I am pretty impressed. I Ran it on 9v not 12v; which I am told will not produce the full volume, through 89db - 6ohm speakers and it sounded ok. I ran my acoustic bass through it with the built in pre-amp on 11 and I was pleasantly surprised. The super 8's are 3db more sensitive (8ohm though)

It should be ok with more appropriate speakers and the correct voltage

I thought that this Box wizard was pretty cool

Did you get a lepai one? I had trouble getting it to work of a 9v battery. Good to hear the bass worked!

Rave on wheels. Mission accomplished

Yeah it is a lepai. I used my dab radio adapter (these are thirsty by all accounts) so it probably has enough to get the thing going. Got a cheap book on making speaker box's, then I am gonna get those super 8's you suggested; then we build a cab.

The bass is an acoustic and has a piezo pickup(i think) so that is lucky.

I think those super 8's were normal (as in not bass) guitar speakers. Not sure now I think about it.

eta: yeah, they are. They're probably a bargain for normal but don't go low enough for bass guitar.

Yeah your probably right, but I think it an ok comromise for a first go.

You're probably right and it'll have the added advantage of playing the midrange so it'll double as a party box.

Have you ever tried your bass through a normal guitar amp/speaker?

These 6.5" look good for the money: http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?id=EVNL027B&browsemode=category

Big magnet, high SPL, low resonant frequency

I use these full rangers and they're excellent value for money. I think they're very similar designs (they're also black in real life, not blue)

Thumbs up. :)

They (the ladies) made us (the gents) sit on a bench and watch while they danced to cat's eye in the middle of the field, to the amusement and subsequent applause of the surrounding park-goers.

It was playing music all day in the park and only got turned off when we got on the bus. Very chuffed :)

Yeah, I had my black one out all weekend and much merriment was had. It does surprisingly well with dubstep :) (using those 6.5" fullrangers shown above)

Ordered the speakers, cost 14 odd quid including delivery. Got to sort out a box now, that's gonna be the bit where it gets interesting

Last night I dreamt I had build a solar powered one, it was 'inside' a rucksack and very lightweight, one day one day!!!

Cool.

A different type of lepai amplifier arrived today. 18w+18w+36w sub class D 12v. Can't wait to try it out.

Yeah Man! i Managaed to get a book on speaker enclosures for less than 4 quid, its and old radio shack one. Post up links and findings if you could please:)

Will do.

Now is the time to warn you about another cheap chinese amp. Says 500w (lol) on the tin, 2x70w in the ebay advert and once I opened it up and checkout out the chip it was 2x8w :D It also sounded awful at anything more than half volume. Only 7 quid or something though. Has high and low pass filter switch and a USB charging port on the front.

Ok, so I'm working out about line vs headphone level at diyaudio:

It's simple really; the line output has a higher voltage than the headphone output.

The headphone output is capable of higher current output but has a limited voltage for multiple reasons (one being to cap the headphone volume level).

If you want the amp to play louder with the headphone output then you need to raise the gain of the amp.

If you want to learn about gain, read this article......

You beauty! Even though the bass has a preamp, its not at the level of a headphone jack. This was my next problem to solve, to make the amp more versatile. I Was in Maplins on Sunday, they do a 20w, rms 6.5'' speaker for £120.

it was OK sonically but you were really paying for the RF. It had came with a wireless system (including mic) and it was internal battery and and mains powered. Played the pod though it, it was nothing special.

Yeah, I forgot to mention but I had someone plug in a bass to my little box yesterday and it hardly registered at all.

I know sure sell some amps with built in gain switches.
