The building your own portable soundsystem thread

Please carry on with all the hard work, sourcing, advice and diagrams, places to purchase etc. Then I can parachute in and get all the info I need for my mobile sound project. Lovely. Hey Mods make this thread a sticky! :)

Do they suffer from having a lower powered amp?

I thought it just means they're less likely to blow up. I like them cos they're

a) cheap
b) solid looking
c) sensitive
d) Flexible size (both wattage and physical) for more than one usage - I can stick em in different arrangements. Good experimenting speakers.

I suppose I should link to an amp, but I'm just using my existing t-amp for now. Type TA2020 into ebay and there's a ton of results all for less than 30 quid :) They're louder than the TA2024 btw

The most common cause of fucked speakers is underpowered amps being driven flat out in an attempt to get more volume. The amp ends up clipping, the drivers go bang.

A good rule of thumb is to have an amp that can deliver twice the power of the RMS rating of the speaker.

I did think about getting one of those fuck off ghetto blaster boxes, in particular the one featured in Spike Lees film that had public enemy playing fight the power all the way through. Is this a silly idea? I would adapt it a bit to take another input and an external battery.

I should probably bugger off from this thread and start me own.

Would it be possible to build a portable bass guitar amp out of this sort of stuff? 15 - 30w would be enough.

The cheapest you could do it is about 20quid amp, 2x10 quid speakers, 1x15 quid battery, a couple of wires and something you find to put it in.

Look on ebay, they're pretty expensive. But if you find one cheap you can rip out the innards and replace them with something that'll sound good, play loud and last a long time.

I had a eye opening moment when I saw how much they fucking cost! That's without the worlds supply of batteries!

I drive mission 760i 75w speakers off the amp at the moment no problem

Thanks Fractionman and sorry for taking the thread on a tangential walk. Do any manufacturers make big fuck off boom boxes (the new pc name?) new now?

Yeah, but that's for your hifi at home, no? I assume you aren't hammering it flat out all day :D

You need a lot more volume outside...

Nah, that's on full all day :D

Perhaps these tamps are slightly different then, as most other build I've seen have used speakers far in excess of 25w. The one above uses 40W speakers and a 15w amp for example/
