Tanks for the Memories

take my money etc.

There was a non-functional one at Hatfield House until 1969. I have been inside it and remember how most of the shell storage had been filled with empty beer and pop cans. I'd love to have a ride in/on one though.

The Hatfield Tank

This Mark one tank was originally placed in Lord Salisbury's Hatfield Park just North of London on 8th May 1919 as a 'Presentation Tank' by the Army Council to commemorate the secret tank trials and inspection there by H.M. King George V in February 1916 of the first type of Tank approved for use by the British Army in the Great War. After 50 years at Hatfield Park it was moved to the Royal Armoured Corps Tank Museum 7th May 1969.

Which reminds me of a basement related story.

A couple of years ago some builders found a 250kg german bomb in the basement of a house (very) near us. Pic below.

Now the house had been in continuous use since being built in the late 19th C. AFAIK.

During the war a bomb fell through the house, through all the floors and buried itself in the basement without exploding. As an idea of size it fitted on a pallet truck when being removed, but only just.

At some point, someone decided that instead of dealing with the 250kg bomb in the basement they would just fix the roof and floors and pretend it never happened.

"What's that ticking sound?"

"STFU Karl".

The German tank aficionado has been handed a €250,000 fine for his troubles, and ordered to sell or give away the tank, as well as an anti aircraft fucking cannon he also possessed :D

I am a bit surprised that he's being allowed to dispose of the anti aircraft cannon himself. I am sure a few would-be terrorists wouldn't mind getting hold of that...

I also love this from another report on the issue:

Local media reported at the time that the man made no secret of his weapons collection and even brought the tank out during a bad winter to use as a snow plow.
