My best mate has always had sports cars. He had a Porsche Boxster recently, used of course, and he said it cost him a fortune in spares and repairs.
Before that he had a Lotus Elise from new and he said that was one of his biggest mistakes.
He says the best model he has ever owned were the two MX 5s he had. Brilliant to drive and cheap to maintain. A proper rear wheel drive, excellent engined sports car.

I've had hot (or nearly hot) hatches for the last 15 or so years, but now I've got the possibility of picking up an SUV with a 1.6 diesel engine (its a CRV), and selling my Civic Sport GT.

My civic is 10 year old, its obviously a lot smaller, a right pain in the arse to fit all my diving kit it, can't really drive it across fields when I'm helping run events, the air con no longer works, it does 350 miles to a tank and costs 250 quid a year VED..... but its quick off the mark and is an absolute joy round corners.

The CRV I'm thinking about taking off my dad is 4 years old, a fair bit slower off the mark but plenty comfortable on the motorway (I rarely drive with a full car), has easily enough space for diving stuff in the back, plenty of clearance for fields, does 650 miles on a fill and cost 30 quid a year in VED.

Will I regret giving up my civic on the odd occasion I fancy a blast ?(I blue light drive too now which I didn't when I bought it, so quick driving is less of a novelty now).

If you enjoy a car then an SUV (boat) will piss you off. Buy a fast estate, people won't look at you with the same disdain either.

Audi TT are cheap

Unless you want to actually drive it instead of just appreciate the aesthetic. Also there seems to be a problem with the paintwork on TT's, I see a lot that have blotches and peel areas. Might just be the older ones.

Why wouldn't you drive it whatever you paid? There's no point in having one if you don't drive the shit out of it.

I've never seen one with paint issues. Some early ones had an issue with the gearbox were a selector fork might come loose. But overall they are solid and reliable.

I’m probably going off piste with this ....

I had one of these 15 years ago. It was reliable, super fast, smooth, comfy, looked amazing

Perfect. I have just started to look into buying a little GTV again over the last few days. The 3litre V6 is a beautiful, balanced, solid engine. Should be able to pick up a reasonable one for about 6k. For a well sorted low mileage "cup" (they still exist) around 12k. Far much more character than a TT.

Still doesn’t have the clearance for fields though.

ive had my dads CRV all weekend and it’s definitely growing on me

This is probably nothing to do with the thread but I'd not be tempted by a smart car but I'd be tempted by a smart/electric car that was lower than a smart car so with sports car type body. I've been told they make such things.

aye 750 cc in this car
