Sporty little car

Fashion mug.

You know nothing.

They are actually very  little cars for many good reasons. You're just seeing an unfashionable badge. Have you ever driven one?

I suspect my grandad has.

Not really, a mate's dad had one and it seemed perfectly decent, but I was really aiming at a two-seat RWD as opposed to a sporty hatch.

Another suggestion:

I had a '73 one of these in the same colour of Damask Red, and it was a lovely car. Some mods like Spax shocks all round for a small amount of money and you've got a great sounding relatively rare British sports car. They're not too much for women to drive either, they just chugg along in any gear really and aren't that powerful, only about 130 bhp. Of course you can add to that in time. ;)

And you can get your shopping in the back. :)

This is killing me - my head says an MX5, my heart says a TVR, MG or Triumph!

All depends upon whether we can get the Picasso fixed under insurance and sold on for sensible money. They're genius cars if you need something to carry kids in, so quietly hopeful, and dealers want about 3 and a half for one in similar nick.

Here's a bit of a curve-ball suggestion. Just mentioning it because of it being a one-owner car, and a decent price.

Not a convertible mind, but how about...

If you want handling, decent-ish mpg, a British classic, rarity, but you'd need it really checked out by an expert.

:)

Oh and another thing, if you opt for the old car route, the insurance is miles, miles cheaper. Mines about £215 fully comp, with an agreed value, without it having to be alarmed or garaged overnight and unlimited mileage.

Also if it's registered before Januaryt 1st 1973, you don't pay road tax, you just turn up to the Post Office once a year with your insurance and MoT and get a free disc to put in your windscreen. :)

Well I've got a Mk1 MX-5 and if you've got £2k to spend, add another 5-600 and you can get a very good one that will last. They are uber-reliable, and great fun. Having kicked tyres with many other MX5 owners they all seem to think the MK2 is not quite as fun. I'd definitely consider a MK3 when I want a newer car but am only doing 3500 miles a year at the moment so can't really justify it.

I'm a bit surprised you're happy to live with one being 6ft 2in. I have a mate whose similar height and moans about his head being blown to bits whenever I give him a lift in it, but if its ok for you then you certainly won't regret the purchase.

At one meet an ex MG owner (new shape) complained about the pipes for the rad that apparently run down the side of the doors and were reliable to rusting and leaks, so he bought an MX5 instead.

PM me if you want a list of things to look for when considering one to buy, I can also give you various links on the web for parts and bits,

Have you seen the S2000 with the Mooncraft hard-top?

How about the far less ferocious TVR, the 2.9 S Series. Surprisingly few for sale, and the ones that are for sale have done fair old mileages, which is rare for a TVR. Reliable Granada engines and lots of leather and walnut for not a lot of money. :) They sound good too, and yer missus could drive it.

I am a little biased on this one, but as the ecstatic owner of a 2001 S2000 I feel that I have to chip in on this one...
Not sure about the other cars mentioned such as MX5, but the Honda has put a smile on my face evrytime I climb into it. I am six foot tall, but plenty of legroom so no problem there...
I have owned an MGB GT and a replica Morgan (fiberglass) with plenty of engine as part of the cars that I have enjoyed in the past, but none of them has come close to the package that the S2000 has to offer.
Having said that, and to add a caveat, mine has a Comptech supercharger and race suspension (thank you, previous owner!), so that might affect the deal, but I have met up with the local (neighboring state) S2000 owner's club and driven a few and my impression remains the same.
Wish I was more clued up on the pic thing, would post pictures of my silver bullet and some of the local ones...
Due to repaint job (again, previous owner) I have no markings on the car. Could not tell you how many times people walk up and say "nice car, what is it?" (yes, great ego boost...).
Just my opinion, like...

Sadly, S2000 outside budget - it's a twenty-plus grand car brand new and seems to hold value (which does say a lot about the car!)

MX5, MR2 etc much, much cheaper.

Bump ! So, a mere 11 years after the most recent post to this thread, and 8.5 years after buying my MR2, it's probably time I looked at another car. Am seriously pondering another MR2, they're cheap, utterly splendid fun and keep on going, mine has 165k on the clock and still manages 340 miles in a day without panting but I know this can't go on forever and it will have to go to the Car Heaven sometime.

Am considering MX5s but they seem a bit plasticky, build-wise, would prefer something with only 2 seats, low mileage, fun and less than £10k (which is all I have saved).

Any ideas Urbanz ?

Toyota GT86?

Boxster. All the way. You get Porsche build quality, handling and prestige.

Or a TT if you don't mind Audi

I can't imagine a 10k Boxster is going to provide trouble free motoring.

MX-5 (of whatever generation) has a lot to commend it as long as it's not rusty. They have amazing aftermarket support and any part you could ever want is available.

Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ is also a good choice. They can be had dirt cheap as they blow head gaskets quite regularly and are a pain in the dick to fix. The stock wheels and tyres are junk though.

I wouldn't be put off if you find the right one. I've got one and really like it. The HG problem is much more prevalent here (Western Australia) because it's hot as fuck 6 months of the year. Should you live in more temperate climes it will be less of an issue. I bought mine with a blown HG for very little cash but had to drop the entire front subframe to fix it. I did the injectors and plugs while it was out because I'm never doing that again.

Stick with Japanese. The German cars will all go wrong and cost a bomb to maintain. The fun you get from driving a boxster or tt will be short livid when you become a regular at your local garage.

Also a second / third hand car like a boxster will have been ragged to fuck by a middle aged man frustrated that he was having to trade it in for a family friendly estate car.

I’m probably going off piste with this ....

I had one of these 15 years ago. It was reliable, super fast, smooth, comfy, looked amazing
