Southwark's late night levy ‘could be final nail in coffin’ for pubs

This sounds like a really fucking stupid idea.

Councillors have unanimously voted to introduce a late-night levy in the London borough of Southwark – a move expected to net the council close to £500,000 per year.

The levy that will apply to any business licensed to sell alcohol between 12midnight and 6am was approved by Southwark Borough Council on 17 July and will come into force on 1 September.

The smallest will be paying under £4.50 a week, with perhaps a 30% reduction, the very largest just over £25 a week.

Not convinced those amounts are enough to put a place out of business.

Me neither, at the lower end, it is less than the selling price of a single pint of beer.

I read an article about this in the Evening Standard yesterday, there were favourable comments from businesses stating that if the money was spent on policing, it was well worth it. One chap who ran a snooker club stated that there were frequent 'incidents', and the police sometimes took 90 minutes to turn up.
