South Africa vs Uruguay

Because the rich white people play posh sports like rugby and cricket and aren't that interested in sports played by poor working class people (ie S African black people)?

Ah well, it's a tricky subject, something for another thread maybe.

Anyway, Uruguay lookin sharp!

Uruguay look great, could go far this tournament. I was rooting for SA and thought they might get an equalizer until the sending off.

Why is there no racial quota policy in south African football btw? As in cricket and rugby.. Serious question. Seems slightly hypocritical..

Altho I totally disagree with the practice in any sport.

Because white people haven't been deliberately kept out of football for years?

I'm not sure what the quotas are at the moment for cricket and rugby (or even if they're still doing them) but it used to be something like one or two players in an 11/15 man team, in an overwhelmingly black country. I don't think a team made up of black players (at the moment, white players have played for them) in the same country is an equivalent situation really.

italia '90 retrospective on the beeb shortly, no doubt trying to prepare us for the inevitable... :(

(that's an eternally optimistic england fan speaking so no letters please :))

There have been plenty of white South African international players. Bradley Carnell played a fair number of games at left back over recent years. Going back a while Mark Fish was a fixture in the team up until 5 years ago. There's never been any hint of players not being selected because of their race. It's just that relatively few white South Africans take football seriously, and currently there aren't any good enough to make the team. There are two white guys in the current squad, Mark Booth and Lance Davids. Not a tricky subject at all.

Uruguay were a different class today, though that should never have been a red card. Penalty fair enough, but it was a perfectly ordinary mistimed challenge and Suarez had already lost control of the ball so there wasn't a goalscoring opportunity.

Shame that S.Africa are probobly going out - I cant see them beating france, a 0-0 maybe, but they really dont have it going forward.

Uruguay looked very good and forlan is the player of the tournament so far :)eek:) - England could meet these in the quarter final - would be a good game I rekon.

Will SA be the 1st host nation not to make it to the 2nd round of the WC?:hmm:
That third goal might have killed them. I think realistically, they need Mexico and France to draw tomorrow, then to beat France and for Uruguay to beat Mexico. Otherwise, they are likely to go out on goal difference whatever they do.

yes i agree, im hoping for a draw between mexico and france. realistically tho i think mexico will beat them.

I dunno Germany miraculously beat Argentina in Quarter-finals last time around… :hmm:

Having caught the replay I’m amazed by Uruguay , if my Spain doesn’t make it, I want them to win now. :D

I don’t think the red was warranted, penalty and Yellow yes… Then again I didn’t mind all the fans living either, made listening to Martin Tyler bearable.. :D

Do you lot not understand the rules of the game? It had to be a red.

Uruguay look sweet. SA are shit and their fans are a disgrace, booing and walking out like that.

Whilst there was definitely contact between the SA goalkeeper and Suarez, he was totally looking for it though. Shame, then again, SA didn't have much to offer after the first Uruguay goal anyway.

Of course he was looking for it...he was in the penalty area and saw the keeper coming legs first. Every single player in the world would do the same. Hell some would do it even if there no contact

Uruguay always played decent football, it would be very nice if they won the world cup.

And I've always loved their flag!!!

If I was a betting person I might bet on them...

Going away from the goal and with defenders coming back? I don't think so, particularly as Suarez (I think) really went down as if he was shot and I'm not convinced that the contact caused his fall.

I don't think that was a penalty. The keepers toe just clipped the Uruguayans toe - hardly a foul.

Nah, he went in high and was waving both legs in the air, if the Uruguayan chap hadn't jumped (and dived) he would have been cut in two. Definite red card and penalty.

Uruguay were great.

Innit. A sure sign they're not real or regular supporters.

Personally I'm pleasantly surprised that the ref didn't rig it in favor of the hosts, as they did so blatantly in 2002.

Just coming back to this - do you not see the hypocrisy of Graeme Smith having to walk out to open the batting for SA with a player who shouldn't be anywhere near the first XI but is, due to his skintone? And then having to face the media time after time, and through gritted teeth, saying the player was 'picked on merit' after he fails, yet again.

If that applies in cricket then logically there should have been an afrikaner in midfield last night.

Racial quotas are fucking stupid and totally divisive IMO, but if they're going to apply them to white dominated sports in SA why not black dominated sports?

Actually, this is a very sensitive issue in South Africa. Football is regarded as the sport of the African people here in S.A. On the whole, most Africans don't really care about cricket, rugby, tennis, swimming, etc. Politicians make noises about these sports to score cheap political points, and rugby and cricket are tolerated besause they generate massive revenue from sponsors and TV deals. They care about football (or soccer as we so daftly refer to it here) and the make-up of the football team is of utmost importants. When Clive Barker coached S.A. to victory in the AFCON 96 tournament, the team was made up predominantly of non-black African (whites and coloureds), and this did not sit well with many people. In fact, Stuart Baxter, a very good coach probably lost his job as coach of SOuth Africa for not picking enough black african players in the national team. The SOuth African football media is a very powerful voice and they were instrumental in getting Baxter fired, ostensibly for other reasons, but ultimately for non-selection of enough african players.

Carlos Alberto Parreira has been sensitive to this issue, and has consistently selected teams that are predominanlty african in their make-up. Only Steven Pienaar has been able to lock down a place in the starting line-up, and he even he looks under pressure to lose his place now (just in terms of what the media are saying).
