Should I get a smart meter?

It will be mandatory soon anyway, as old meters are required to be replaced, and there won't be any non-smart meters to replace them with.

In my case I will leave it to whoever buys my wreck of a house for cash and practically rebuilds it.

Assuming my France plans come to fruition, once there I will have an EDF SMART meter and a decision to make about whether to invest in solar with my unusually low energy usage - I suppose improving battery economics will skew things in the years ahead - I can't see myself being a candidate for a conventional electric car with its large battery for many years if ever...

I can't imagine anyone is making non smart meters anymore so at some point the stock of such things is going to run out. I can't imagine (yet at least) any compulsion to switch but before too long it is going to be any meter replaced will be with a smart meter or nothing.

The flat I have lived in for three years has a bog standard PAYG meter. I made three appointments with EDF to change it to a standard one after I moved. Each time the engineer failed to turn up so I gave up. Now EDF are badgering me because they want to put me on a smart PAYG meter. Not a normal meter but yet another PAYG meter. I've never had any debt or credit issues yet they want to force me to have another top up meter. Complaint raised, still no joy so Ofgem here we come.

mum-tat has had an e-mail from EDF about going on to a smart meter.

it gives the appearance of saying she's got to have it

i thought it wasn't compulsory.

is this a load of bollocks that she should just ignore?
Fuck them off

You don’t have to have one

I got strong armed into one swapping from a key meter to direct debit

Don’t give the fuckers anymore control than they already have

Tech companies might be parasitical capitalist scum as well but overall I think they are doing cool stuff. Facilitating communication. Improving awesome technology. Making the things I dreamed about when I was 15 happen. Yes the abuse of data is shocking but I am "accepting" of that to some extent for what I am getting.

Energy companies do absolutely fuck all that I think is inspired or noble or redeemable for their greedy piggery. Just lying about how much green stuff they have built themselves (answer - zero) while stealing our taxes, flogging gas for big bucks and financialising themselves to the nth degree. Then when they go bust they force a payout! They are beyond reproach. I am with Bulb now Ocotopus who are probably the best of a bad bunch but i still wouldnt piss on their CEO/founder if he was on fire. I would warm myself for free on his burning corpse.

I dont have one and I dont pay by direct debit either. Dont see the point.

Youre literally feeding them your data for free with a meter. And lending them money to boost their cashflow with dd. Am I fuck helping with their profits.
This winter I have been religiously volunteering my usage every few days - largely it's all been about trying to stay under the £67 and sticking it to all who deserve it...
I challenge them to make sense of my lifestyle were they to start monitoring my usage more closely.
I'm definitely an outlier.
If I manage to whittle my usage down a bit more, I may eventually end up more or less offgrid during the summer at least with a very small solar installation.

Isn't building fewer power stations "cool stuff"? Because that's what will ultimately be done with smart meter data.

What do you think they'll do, try and flog you takeaway pizzas on Mondays because they know you can't be arsed to cook then?

Pffft well no I dont believe that. I think it will likely be sold off to make money in the future. And part of the problem this country is in a fucking mess is because of trusting various (green) capitalist shitbags/chancers like Bulb and cunts like EDF while neglecting key national infrastructure. While all time funneling money into ancient gas back up plants run by parasites at massive taxpayer expense. Where is the energy for a green economy or even degrowth going to come from? Thin air?

Our renewable infrustructure is still sorely lacking. And they have fucked up with most obvious thing.. nuclear power.

If energy companies had actually done a single thibg in the past 30 years at their own expense and in any way progressive I might not hate them so much. But they genuinely havent. Its all just a massive con.

And they want us to get smart meters. Why wouldnt you do the opposite. I dont think they really help you save much energy anyway (but thats a separate argument).

Energy suppliers don't want to install smart meters, it's hassle and expense for them with no upside. They're only doing it because they're required to by government.

If you want the future to be renewables and batteries, smart meters will be an essential part of that.

I'm going to enjoy looking at my smart meter as it gets warmer and I can see I'm spending less.

The energy company obviously doesn't trust it though as I keep getting emails they want a conventional reading.

Another bit that mildly annoys me is I only want to pay for the energy I use. So why can't I have a direct debit linked to how much the smart meter says I have. Apparently this is impossible, with Octopus at least.

Bulb (Octopus) are being reasonable with my desire to get my credit down. I'm currently paying £19 a month.

They let you reduce once youve built up a nice healthy credit but obviously with their millions of customers they have massive reserves of cash.

Which is obviously being used for financial speculation and whatnot rather than actually doing anything related to their core business 99% of the time.

I don't think mum-tat is a smart meter denier, she just doesn't really like anything changing, doesn't like having people coming round to do stuff in her house, and doesn't want to have to clear crud out of the cupboard under the stairs for it to happen. (she did put up with it for the gas meter, as it was in a damn awkward position to read)
